I acquired a fairly early Savage No4 rifle. The serial is 0C360XX. As Smellie would say, Bubba & Co. did get to it first unfortunately!! It has a full length excellent cond. 2 groove barrel that is uncut but the sad part is the early style "low cut" fore-end has been shortened and sanded to death!! Original bolt is AWOL!

There are some interesting stampings on top of the breech. If indeed it is a "C broad arrow" stamp as it appears to be that to me seems unusual......I've haven't inspected a ton of Savage No4's, but a few and can't recall seeing one so marked, maybe someone could shed some light on that. The other daisy type stamp indicates what?

Apologies for the ignorance!

Hi Bros. Although uncommon it appears that your No.4 does sport a C broad arrow indicating acceptance into Canadian service. The asterisk
mark indicates either a bad spot or pitting in the chamber or could even mean a bulge in the chamber. John

Thanks jtaylor....interesting that a Savage Enfield was excepted in Canadian service, but when they were "over the pond", I guess a rifle was a rifle whether a Canadian soldier carried a Long Branch or a US made Savage mattered little.

I'm going to to have to do some more homework in the department of "stampings" as to what they all mean. I have the books so no excuse but sometimes it nice to get a chat going over one thing or another!!

I'll be sure to inspect the chamber closely.....the fellow I purchased it from told me he fired it many times but that doesn't mean a thing in my books.

Cheers.

Thanks for that correction...an oversight on my part!
Obviously the stock is not original to that rifle as well then......no big deal....just thinking out loud.

hey no problems, I've had my own brain farts when thinking about enfields

I do have an early Savage 5C serial and it a Mo4MkI no star so I think it is very close to the end of the Savage MkI production.
