Well I finally made it out to the range to try out my 7.62 x 39 AR build. It has been snowing and cold lately but today was a balmy +4 so off I went.

The gun is fun to shoot although the recoil is much more noticeable than the 5.56 round. It isn't bad though. I had a 13 year old helping me with the testing and he got to shoot it after the serious stuff and couldn't get enough.

I was using the Hornady 123 gr. SP, brand new WW brass, with a variety of powders. AA 2230 worked not too bad and turned in a 5 shot group at 100 yds of 1.80 inches. Not fantastic but ok. Using Ball C-2 I shot 3 groups and they averaged 1.62 inches at 100 yds. I did notice what appeared to be unburnt powder on the bolt carrier, however. Maybe magnum primers will help that load.

Best groups were with Reloder 7 as suggested by another CGN member, Yippert. I used 24.0 and 24.5 grains and Federal LR Match primers. I fired a 3 shot group that measured 1.198 inches and a five shot group that was under an inch until I fired the fifth shot and that stretched it out to 1.68 " Aaargh! My fault.

I was able to get some Hornady 123 gr. V-Max bullets and things got real interesing here. After getting it sighted in because although it was the same bullet weight, the POI was quite different. Anyway I shot the best group ever with the V-Max bullet, 24.5 grs. of Reloder 7 and the Federal Match primer. The five shot group measured .914 inches. Considering it is being fired out of a 16" barrel and I never intended it to be a bench rest gun I am quite satisfied. One of my original goals was to have a gun that shot the same round as the SKS or VZ but would shoot it much better for close to the same price. I think that part of the project was successful. Also, the brass ends up in a nice pile ahead and to the right of the gun and the brass isn't beaten to death like it is with the SKS.

Some people have asked for more details about the gun. I am not really certain what you would like to know but it is attached to a Colt lower, uses a DPMS 16" barrel on a Cerro Forge upper (these are the uppers made for RRA, DPMS and others). I had to substitute the bolt (DPMS) but it fits in the carrier so I didn't have to buy another one.

The project hasn't been without it's problems. The gun frequently jams at the moment. I believe it is because the bolt hasn't mated to the carrier yet. If I thoroughly clean and heavily lube the bolt it works flawlessly but not for long. A very knowledgable friend who advised me on this project feels that it will eventually work itself out but in the meantime it is the only downside to the project and is a bit annoying.

As an aside, the ACOG clone works vey well on this gun but I will probably put on a Holosight and return the ACOG to it's 5.56 barrel. I seem to have one of the good ones but I don't know how much pounding it will take with the 7.62 x 39 round.

Now if only you could hunt with it . . .

Below is the 5 shot group with the V-Max bullet.

I built mine on a 20" DPMS barrel. I've function tested it with some handloads (A bit light) and some Chinese non-corrosive ball (Worked very well). I'll try to sneak out to the range next week for an actual range test. Then I will begin praying for the day when we get a boatload of non-corrosive ammo from the Chinese!!!!

Ruger,

It would be interesting to see what kind of groups Czech surplus ball gives in your rifle. Most of us don't have a super accurate 7.62x39 platform to test out the accuracy potential of the M43 ammo - but you do.:)
Perhaps you could try some out and let us know how good that surplus ball is?
Unfortunately it's corrosive, not sure if that would be an issue on whether you want to try it or not.

That has crossed my mind. I have been trying to get some non-corrosive S & B in fmj. It might be worth it, as you say, to test it on a one time basis. It would require a thorough cleaning which I don't want to do an a regular basis. (I tend to baby my guns. They get shot lots but I'm not into the windex, etc.) Another reason to use reloads.

I will let you know when I get some.

not that thorough.

On my vz58L I just field strip it, lay all the parts down in the bathtub, and dump two kettles of boiling water on it, with emphasis on the chamber, bore, and gas block.... Pretty simple and it gets rid of all the corrosive crap.

Sorry, too much gas going everywhere to chance it.
I'll handload or use the non corossive stuff when I can find it. Going to try and get out with the 20" on Sunday and see what kind of accuracy I can get.

where did you purchase your rifles and at what price?

where did you purchase your rifles and at what price?

Didn't buy the rifle- I put it together using the parts quoted in the post. (I am assuming you read the post.) Started with a Colt lower that I had but have since switched to an Armalite lower from Wolverine Supplies and went from there.

7.62x 39 Update

Just a quick update to this post. The ACOG clone packed it in. Should have known. I did take it off and put it back on the .223 but it went south shortly after that.
The jamming issues happened because the extractor kept breaking off little pieces because the extractor spring was too weak. Replaced it with a stronger spring and better "donut" and it works fine now. Florida plastic mags were garbage, replaced them with CH metal ones that work flawlessly.
Finally I put a Falcon Menace scope on it (thank you Frontier Sports) and it is about as good as I can make it at the moment.
Just got in 100 new WW brass to add to the ammo box and we will be firing off a lot of ammo at Christmas at the range. Lots of steel to pick on from 200 to 500 yds. Will let you know how that goes.

Next project: 6.8 SPC Upper!

Nice setup, looks like she'll do just fine if she continues to group like that. what's the reticle like on the FACOGs and where do you find AR 7.62x39 mags?

The reticle was very good. Switching to 2 or3 hundred m there was no drop in bullet impact if you used the corresponding reticle. Also, the reticles were the exact width of a figure 11 at those distances. I have heard that the newer F-ACOG's have been improved but frankly I wouldn't use them again unless it was on a rimfire. I learned a lesson on that one. Reliable costs more.

You can order CH directly from CH's website i think but not 100% certain, also try Brownells. I got mine through a friend who goes south a lot.

The 7.62x39 case has been the parent case of some very accurate cartriges, I guess the weak link has always been the launcher. I'd love to see someone do a really accurate purpose built 7.62x39 bolt gun, as this build seems to suggest there's real accuracy potential at a reasonable cost hidden in there. Very nice work.
