hey folks,
a farmer friend of mine - who currently only has an old Enfield - wants a cheap rimfire for shooting smaller pests/varmints around the farm. he says its getting expensive shooting at skunks with the old .303 :)
id loan him something but his idea of taking care of a gun is having it rattle around on the metal floor of his truck all day :runaway:

how are the .17HMR NEF hinge actions? theyre around $170 brand new.

Accuracy wise they are supposed to be OK I only have centerfire handi's

I guess that depends on the pests, 22 runs out of usefulness pretty quick.

Though guys for years have been shooting 22 around the yard and such I would feel much better with the hmr and it's much lower richocet rate.

And as a truck gun nothing gets the first shot off faster than a break-open.

agree on the 22lr comments.. you can pick one up used pretty much anywhere.. I looked the the NEF HMR too. The knock against them was the trigger pull.

For the $170 you can pick up a Remmy 597 for pretty close to the same money .. .22lr semi auto plinker. More than enough for skunks and pests !

17's are relativly expencive compared to .22's can buy a brick of .22's for about the same price of a box of .17's

id likely go with a .22 semi or pump for pests on a farm. for a groundhog and such id likely go with something with longer reach. but for things that are close up a .22 should do the trick.

the NEF handi rifle heavy barrel single shot 17HMR is probably the most accurate 17 Ive owned. I can shoot out the tacks holding the target to the board at 75yds. I have a 6x24 Tasco on top. Less than 270 dollars for the whole set up.

Yup 17HMR ammo is about 13 bucks for 50.

I would not part with mine.

Agreed. I took a challenge to build a sub .5 MOA 100 yard rifle for 500.00...INCLUDING OPTICS! I bought that exact gun, tweaked the crap out of it, threw a 8-32X scope on it in crappy rings and hit the bench. First box sucked (Hornady)...like 1-1.25". Second box (CCI TNT HP's) printed 3/8" 5 shot groups. Total investment? 400 bucks....including tax!

Best value in an HMR.

That's funny, my rancher friend is the same. And he's got expensive guns in the tractors, like Sako, etc. - muzzle down on the floor. I've tried educating him, but he really doesn't care ;)

And IIRC, that particular rifle was once mine (we did some horse tradin' a while back). I killed gophers at 200M with it regularly......absolutely DEADLY accurate rifle for the money! I miss it BTW.....good to hear it is well loved....

I decided I couldn't go anywhere with my handi-rifle unless I took a cleaning rod along as well. Occasionally the wimpy extractor/ejector wouldn't do the job. Sold it.

I never heard of ejector problems with the rimfires, centerfire's yes, though that has been fixed with the switch to an mechanical extractor.

A little off topic, but shotguns are good for dispatching skunks. Quick kill and less chance of ricochet. I must confess though I have no experience with skunks and a 17hmr to make a comparison.
