Model 60 Cooey

The 60 model typically were drilled on the side of the receiver and the 600 was a grooved receiver. There might be some odd exceptions but I've never seen them.
 
So, when Winchester bought out Cooey, most models got a "0" added - Cooey 84 became a Cooey-Winchester 840, for example. I have had a number of Cooey 60 and Cooey 39 - most are not drilled/tapped for side mount - none had the dovetails on top. All the Cooey-Winchester 600 I have worked with, did have the dovetails. I do have a Cooey 60 that has been drilled and tapped - however - not likely by the factory, since a Weaver side base #2 and rings put the scope noticeably over to the right of the barrel - might have worked fine for a bended sheet metal mount like Weaver used to sell - just bend it where you need it?

I've got a 600 in my gun safe and it is grooved. I picked it up in the early '70s at the Kmart in Blossom Park on the south side of Ottawa. That will trigger memories for some .....

Just not finding good reference material about old Cooey's - no serial numbers - when features were added or removed, etc. Your experience is different than mine - I have never seen a Cooey 60 with grooves, nor a Cooey-Winchester 600 without grooves. All good! It is for history...

I think you just filled in some blanks in the timeline. My original, NIB 600 was purchased in early 1968. There were still a few pre-Winchester Cooey rifles and shotguns on the racks at that point. Your post seems to suggest that the shift from tapped to grooved mounts occurred between these dates.

As a side note, I got a chuckle when I read that you had bought your Cooey at a Kmart way back when. Mine came from a Steinberg's department store. Back then, most department stores and "sports stores" including those that focused on team sports and golf also sold guns and ammo. Gone are those days! Fortunately, there's STILL Cooey!
 
Some of the Cooey model 60's did come factory drilled for a Weaver side mount. I have one in the box.

I've seen my share of early Cooey 600's that are not grooved and do have the tapped holes.

Not sure if it's the same ones but some have plastic triggerguards that often seem to be cracked.

The later 600's I've seen have the grooved receiver and a steel trigger guard, both of which are worthwhile features IMHO.
