Let's See Those Clay Target Guns

Great looking clay guns guys, keep them coming! I was using a 725 Sporting myself but sold it as I'm another one who likes to use field guns for clays. Currently a Citori White Lightning 12g and a Rizzini Artemis 20g, nothing too fancy so won't bore with pics. My Artemis does have case coloring though and you can definitely tell they put a clear coating over it...I think it's stunning with the sideplates and CC.
 
My trap gun is an 870 Rem that I fitted out with a Mesa Tactical Recoil Stock & Enidine buffer. The fore grip be a Pachmyer Vindicator unit. I lengthened the forcing cone, Flex Honed the bore & chamber and screwed on an I.M. Comp-N-Choke tube. I tweeked the trigger to my liking and mounted a Bushnell Holo Sight on 'er as well as coating the surfaces with Arma Coat.

This somewhat, unconventional setup has scored well for me over the years both in registered shoots and meat shoots. When I'm on game, the bugger gets 'er done. Really fun to watch folks reactions to the unit at shoots to boot. Only buggaboo now is, I gotta ditch the Holo Sight in favor of a 2x scope as me old peepers suck now with dot sights.

Further to our discussion regarding color case hardening on the Perazzi's, my curiosity got the better of me so I wrote an email to Italy on Saturday asking what method of coloring they used on their guns and this is the reply I got back this morning.



Dear Mr ######XX

Thank you very much for your mail

Most probably the MX 8 hardening case colour has been produced different year ago …

Now for the new rules in Italy the Hardening case colour could be done only with chemical process and not natural like before

So if I read this correctly and taking into consideration that the respondent to my question does not have English as a first language, the older guns such as the Comp 1 and older Mx8 could be bone charcoal but due to state regulations the later guns are all sodium cyanide colored. Unfortunately he gives no indication in his reply what year it may have been when they switched from one method to the other.
Isn't it great what you can ask a question and get an answer from half way around the world in 32 hours!

Interesting. Can't believe it could be enviromental regulations. Process involves packing the metal parts with various charcoal products and heating to a given temperature for a certain duration, then cooling. The very word "cyanide" makes me nervous about that procedure.
Oskar Kob in Nova Scotia case colours in the good old fashioned way. I'll post a pic of his work in a day or two.

Obviously that style of pistol grip didn't hinder your shooting.

I was told cyanide colouring is a thing of the past due to the release of vapours that are not good to be working in so its not done any longer.
 
This is a Westley Richards game gun case coloured by Oscar Kob and now proudly owned by Ashcroft. Looks better to me than the cyanide method.
Sorry the pic is upside down but you can still enjoy the case colours.

OK Bill, not fair, you're showing off my gun! Upside down too. Here is what it looks like right side up. And a couple of pictures of a T Mortimer 16 gauge that I had bone charcoal case coloured by Turnbull in the US about 15-16 years ago. The third gun shown is a Husqvarna Model 300 sidelock from 1912 with original case colours, protected by varnish but still faded.

and one of my prized model 12 1962 trap with presentation leather case tags etc. and notorized letter from the original owner that the gun had shot 4 rounds of trap.not any more:)

I don't know Frank, my interpretation of the email reply could be wrong and to be clear, he didn't say they were using cyanide but only a chemical process, maybe they have come up with an alternative to cyanide.

The AR type setup is the best I've found for fast action & the straight line recoil design really helps soften the boot on those 300 clay sessions.
Me other units worked dandy for me as well, especially my Mossy 835. Best pattern tossin' gun I ever had for long reach shots. ;)

How do you access or operate the tang safety on the 835?
