I'll preface this by saying that I never had a huge interest in ELR. I live on the coast and it took me long enough to find a good spot nearby where I could hang targets out to about 1000 yards. I was perfectly happy shooting at that kind of distance with my .308 and 6.5 and 6mm comp guns. I didn't really see the need for a "boomer". Then I realized that with a bit of work, I could hang a couple targets out at 1500 and 1600 yards... Although in good conditions making hits at those distances with 6s and 6.5s was do-able, you really didn't get much energy on target and being in cut blocks, spotting your splash was often impossible. Being that my spot is in the mountains and over very complex terrain, I wanted something that would both buck the wind better and carry more energy, mostly to help in spotting splash. I thought my hybrid ELR/long range hunter in 7SAUM would scratch that itch but then I got to thinking... I could shoot ELR every day if I wanted to and it would be a pity to so quickly burn out a carbon barrel.

So that's how I decided to build a .30cal magnum. Originally, I was going to do it on more of a budget and and just re-barrel a Rem 700 .300WM with either a long .300WM or .300PRC barrel. As things often do when it comes to firearms, the build snowballed a bit and this is what I ended up with:

-Stiller Tac .338 with a 29.5" Krieger 9tw spun up in .300 Norma Magnum and cerakoted by the wizards at Insite Arms and sporting their 5-port brake
-MDT ESS (with folding stock and vertical grip) with 15" full pic rail handguard and MDT high 20moa scope rail for a continuous pic rail, as well as a full length RRS dovetail under the handguard
-MDT CIP length .338LM mags
-Trigger Tech 2-stage Special with black PVD flat trigger
-Bushnell XRS2 in a MDT One-Piece mount with a Burris FastFire3 mounted on an accessory cap
-either a MDT standard height or triple-pull Ckyepod, depending on my intentions/mood that day
-happily sits (with stock folded) in an Armageddon Gear M2010 soft case

It didn't take long for this rifle to pretty much become one of my favourites! The 5-port brake and heavy weight (21lbs with bipod and empty mag) make for surprisingly tame recoil and the performance of a Berger 220gr LRHT going 3200fps is pretty awe-inspiring. The rifle consistently shoots sub-1/2moa and I've routinely taken it out as far as I can right now (1665 yards). I was surprised to find myself spotting my own trace with it (something I've worked hard to do routinely with "PRS-type match" calibers but never expected out of a big .30cal magnum) and when shooting it standing/kneeling/seated off a tripod it's not an issue to spot hits/misses though I'll grant that other than load dev, I've never shot it inside of 830 yards. Unlike with a 6 or 6.5mm, there's really no question whether or not you've hit the plate at 1500+ as it's still packing 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 1600 yards! I enjoyed shooting it so much that when my long range spot got snowed in this fall, I found myself putting on snowshoes and slinging it up to hike in. Helps that at 21lbs it's still lighter than my match rifles and I'm used to carrying them around all day for field matches, haha.

Super cool. Nice setup. Glad to see a boomer getting used a lot. They need to get out often to make them fun and worthwhile.

Thanks! I agree, that's kinda why I never really had much interest in boomers till I had easy access to distances worthy of one, haha. Question is, will I need a new barrel before the Nightforce ELR match this year (provided our overlords ever let us out of the country again)? Have enough bullets and powder stocked up to burn out this barrel, not that it'll take much(1000 rds or so).

Order the barrel now. Like winter wheels, the new owners will like them if you don’t need them. It sucks to wait.

Nice looking rifle! .300NM is an excellent round, you can certainly stretch a round like that out to some great distances. The excellent options in .30 cal lathe turned solid projectiles are also worth exploring, especially in the .300NM which can really take advantage of the extra velocity that those projectiles like.

How would this unit compare in a PRS match? Think it would cost or gain your points overall?

There's no advantage to running a .300NM in a PRS match.

The high recoil would certainly come as a penalty, especially in more compromised positions. Targets are rarely if ever far enough to be an advantage over short action cartridges, so you would never realize the advantage of a .300NM in a PRS match. It would also be an expensive way to shoot a match, with the higher cost of components going into it.

The only PRS match that it would make sense for is the Nightforce ELR challenge, which may not even be a PRS match anymore, considering the current drama between Shannon/PRS and Scott Satterlee.

As KThomas said, there would be zero advantage to running a .300NM in a typical PRS-type match. The recoil would be a big downside in compromised positions, the added cost would suck and you'd most likely knock down/break some of the closer targets, haha.

Nice rig. What optic and mount are you using?

Mine's a similar build (Tac 338 and Kreiger barrel) chambered in .338 Norma Mag built by ATRS.

I'm using a Nighforce ATACR in a Near mount and rail which gives me 60MOA of cant, allowing me to dial way, way up and use all of the scope's 120MOA.

The .338 has 1450 ft-lbs at 1500m with 300gr OTM's, for comparison. It's a real hoot going out and popping some steel with it.

Thanks. Nice rig as well.

The optic is a Bushnell XRS2 in an MDT One-Piece mount. I've always been really impressed with Bushnell's Elite Tactical line, super solid optics, good glass and they track like surveying equipment. It's on a 20 moa base but it's a tall base (to line up with the full length pic rail on the handguard) so I should be able to dial past 2000 yards. For reference it's currently sub 12 mils to 1600, thing is a laser beam. I figure if I ever want to (or have the opportunity to) really stretch it out, I'll probably invest in a clip-on prism like the NF or Charlie Tarac as I can just pop it on the full-length pic rail.

Yes, you do have that advantage with the long rail. Happy shooting. I can't wait for the snow to melt around here. My walk in can be brutal.

Luckily I can sled into mine. I was just snowshoeing in early season as I could drive to within 1.5km and wasn't worth loading up the sled for that. Just need to pick up a new ramp for the sled since I got a new truck, haha.

Didja get a 150 with an 8’ bed for the sled??

Beautiful looking rig. Glad you can stretch it’s legs out there....

Cheers, Barney
