Exactly. I learned that the hard way, but like I said before, now that I'm wiping it down with oil regularily, NO MORE RUST ISSUES, at least enough that I don't find the need to buy a Mossberg or Norinco...

The gun serves me fine, so of course I'm satisfied.

Telling me to vote not satisfied because I have to wipe my shotgun down with oil is like telling me to say a car sucks because the cupholder is 6 inches away from where I'd like it to be.

I know I bought a $300 shotgun. In light of this, I cannot expect Benelli performance. Hell it's the cheapest gun in my cabinet right now (Ruger 10/22 and Savage 111 FCXP3).

As a final note, my theory on the rust proneness has nothing to do with the weakness of the finish itself, but rather it's rough nature. There is much more surface area to penetrate with oil, and it is more difficult to oil the entire surface properly as compared with a smooth finish. My reasoning? The bore is not turning brown, and still has quite the mirror finish.

Not really, the 870P is based on the Wingamster and I don't think you will ever get a no vote on a poll about the wingmaster. They are/were a better receiver.

The 870P also uses all machined steel parts vs some of the MIM parts in the express. The P models are also hand assembled and fitted. I have compared my 870P back to back with an 870 express and well...there is no comparason. I would not part with the former and would not own the latter.

They work, ( I have 6 for club guns) but they ain't no wingmaster!!
Big difference between the two , yup.
However, I've never had one break, they cycle well if not a bit rough on some, and they have the easy slide release and barrel take downs that the wingmaster does.
A pretty affordable shotgun if you are looking for a pump gun....

Both mine are wingmasters so I have nothing to compare with. The Expresses I've played with seem to need some "breaking in" to work properly. Have a friend who had one NIB, jam-o-rama for the first 300 rounds or so, then smooth as silk, and the guy doesn't know what cleaning a gun means, to him it consists of taking one of those Hoppes no9 wipe thingys, shove it in the chamber, close the action, then pull it out and discard. Tried to show him how to take it appart and clean/lube it properly, but he just wasn't interested in my input.

I would tend to agree. Before my 870 Express fired its first shot, one of the things I did was to have the original finish removed by media blasting (which smoothed the surface), then getting it park'd and refinished in baked Teflon (the result is as you see in the earlier photos).

Sure, it's an extra expense (the cost of which will vary depending on where you get it done) ...but it's an effective option to deal with the original factory finish. The Teflon is extremely tough and scratch resistant (in fact, after a couple of thousand shells through it, I've still yet to get a scratch on the gun) ...and even if it should get scratched, the baking process actually melds the chemistry of the Teflon to the metal, making the properties of the Teflon 'part of the gun'.

Not only will a Teflon finish virtually 'rust proof' any part that it's applied to, it's smooth, pleasing to the eye, and available in a limited range of colours (satin black and matte gun metal grey among them). If you're of a mind to upgrade your 870 Express, it's money well spent (IMO).

As far as reliability is concerned, I've fired well over 1000 shells with my 870 (summer and winter) since I purchased it about two years ago and have yet to experience even a single FTF or FTE.

Exactly. Something not being perfect does not necessarily mean that it sucks, and if it goes bang every time, and you feel that you got good value for your dollar, then what's to complain about ?

Remington 870 Express Magnum owner here. I've shot 8 turkeys and 4 deer with my gun in the past 5 years. I love this gun, with a rifled barrel and 3-9x scope, shes a real tack driver at 100 yards as far as shotguns are concerned.

Well, rust is the only problem I've had with the 870, otherwise it's served me well. I don't expect much from a $300 shotgun, it just has to fire and shoot ducks, and it's served that purpose; for that I am satisfied. If I wanted a gun with looks AND functionality, I'd get an SBE2, but I'm a cheapass Though I do plan to buy a SX3

Never had a problem with it. Always cleaned and oiled so there's never been a problem with rust. My Mossberg 500 hasn’t left the gun cabinet since I bought the 870.

I have an 18" 870 Express bought in Sept 06. I've got a little over 200 rounds through it (mostly slugs). It jams on occasion and I'm looking forward to reaching the 500 round mark because that's when I consider a firearm 'broken in'. I'm not particularly dissatisfied with it but I'm concerned about the occasional jamming issues. Actually, I think it's pretty good value for a 'cheap' gun BUT it's my bear defense gun and I need to rely on it. Once I get 500 rounds through it and if it still jams 'on occasion' then it's history. FWIW, I voted 'not satisfied' because I won't bet my life on it as it is.....

and I know that you voted yes! BTW I like the pics of your rig You have made a silk purse out of a sow's ear! I mean that as a compliment! Remington would do well to make the type of product that you ended up with. Your gun is a credit to you, and in no way should the product preserntly produced by Remington deserve anything but a failing grade. I have owned hundreds of firearms in my life and I only comment on what I have had personal experience with. Present day express and Remington in general is on the top of my list as POS!

What I don't understand is your insistence to restate your position over and over again in a thread that's intended to poll 'opinions' (in the plural) as opposed to an 'opinion' (in the singular). Doing so doesn't make anyone accept or reject how you feel any more than raising your voice in an actual face-to-face conversation makes you 'right'.

How much you want for the 500 if it's an 18.5"; my friend is interested in a gun like that

I like my 870 but I think the finish is sh*t cause i got a tiny rust spot but I maintain it real well.
My 870 18" is the gun I'd trust my life to.

Satisfied/unsatisfied is kind of open to interpretation anyways. Unsatisfied could be "I like another gun better" or "will the gun fall apart after 30 rounds". Satisfied could mean "Does it work" or "Is this the best gun ever"

You should have been more specific in your poll.

If you consider satisfied = "this is my preferred shotgun" vs. unsatisfied "this is not my preferred shotgun", a [75% yes/25% no] which is how it seems to be going down, it would actually be pretty good numbers.

I dunno know man. "I am unsatisfied with my 870 Express". Seems unambiguous to me.
