Red Dot Problem

I am at an age where a red dot on a pistol really makes life easier, if the thing works.

Today I was shooting 5 pistols with red dots. 3 Burris and 2 Vortex.

My Burris FastFire3 has developed a unique problem. Instead of a a single dot, I see 2 smaller dots, one above the other. This not astigmatism. I wear corrective lenses and the other sights show a single dot just fine.

I have had this Red Dot on a 9mm pistol for about 3 years. It has not been used much. Still on the original battery.

I am hoping you can tell me a quick fix, like clean something or change the battery.

I would both clean and change the battery. Check by where the diode emitter is to see if there is any hair or obstruction that might be splitting or blocking the light on the way to the glass.
If you do both and you still have issues, I'd contact Burris.

At the same time I posted my question here, I also sent a similar message to Burris Customer Support. Within 15 minutes, they responded.

I love companies that care about their customers. I own 3 of these units.

Hello,

The most common cause of what you are experiencing is a dirty emitter lens. Even if you can't see it, there could be debris or a fingerprint smudge on it that is obstructing the dot. It is very easy to accidentally touch that surface during mounting. The Emitter lens is located behind the mounting screws toward the back of the sight. We recommend cleaning that with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip. While you are at it, we also recommend cleaning both sides of the main lens in the same way. In addition to a dirty lens, astigmatisms can cause these and other issues with red dot sights such as the FastFire.

Thank You,

Reading the the Amazon.com 1 star reviews, there are some real unhappy customers with this product. (Particularly with the battery cover.)

Very bad product, in a two weeks time I returned 3 Burris fastfire 3 the first two items 8 Moa had multiple red dots in the glass, the last one was a 3 Moa, the Red Dot appears to look more like a starburst unacceptable. The last BF3 I took it to two gunsmith just to confirm I wasn't having a medical issue LOL. After conversing with Burris they indicated that they would fix this problem and it wasn't the first time they were hearing about the situation.

Red dot was starburst, I do not have astigmatism, I cleaned the emitter multiple times and the dot stayed the same wierd star blob as I angled the sight either way.

You may just have a defective unit.

I wonder if you are getting a double reflection off the front, rather than the back of the lens ( mirror) which is what it is when you think about it. Maybe, Just a wild hair idea.

Not saying anything, but has someone else looked that it? I seem to have flies flying in front sometimes , even in winter. Almost as much a pain in the butt as JT. and his circus.

Taking a picture of the dot will rule out eye issues, Ganderite are you looking at it outside or inside with lights in the room? I notice sometimes with indoor lighting I can get some flaring but I also have astigmatism.
Nice to hear that Burris is responsive. Did you try cleaning the glass as well on both sides as they recommended?

Ya last fast fire I sent in for warranty 3 years ago took better part of 7 months to have it returned and was still defective another 4 months and I had a brand new site. Not the fastest service
