SHTF : Why AR's ?

That won't be a factor. You'd need to go looking for potable water and/or food LONG before you ever had to fire off 3300 rounds. In fact, if anyone comes at your house strong enough to require 3300 rounds, you are going to LOOSE.

When you finally DO have to leave sanctuary to forage, you can;t carry anywhere near that much ammo anyhow ;)

+1. Why do people need that much ammo?? SHTF! it's called that for a reason... unless you have skills to actually survive without running water and a stove/fridge... You're Fck'd, dosen't matter how much ammo you have for your lightweight AR.

I think we're all digressing from the original question here. We can talk till we're blue in the face about the all the different aspects of various SHTF scenarios. No single firearm is going to be the best choice for all of these situations...but how many of us only own one firearm?

A couple of points.

#1. If the police come to confiscate the rifle in my hands during a SHTF situation, I'll hand it over. They're not going to go away just because I don't feel like giving them my rifle, and my family's chances are better with an unarmed me than with a dead or imprisoned me. Besides which, the police aren't likely to have immediate access to the registry information, which means that they aren't likely to know that I've got a backup gun. And a backup to the backup.

#2. In a SHTF scenario that is not a TEOTWAWKI situation (Katrina), a relatively compact, non-restricted general-purpose weapon would be a huge asset. This means that you can "bug out" with your pre-packed gear (you DO have 72 hours of food, clothing, water, and survival gear packed in a duffel bag in your basement, don't you?) and said firearm. All of this can still be accomplished while not violating current firearms laws. Whether it's an 870 or an AR-180B with a folding stock or a VZ folder, you have options when things get hairy...and you'll still be operating within the law if things are not hairy.

By the way...how many of you AR guys limit yourselves to five round magazines? Don't most of us have at least a few 10 rounders? Unless you're planning on shooting zombies with your 10/22, those Questar type 10 round mags are about as good as you're going to get in terms of number of rounds on board while still adhering to current firearms laws.

speak for yourself.

A rifle and ammo is all you need if SHTF. Worst comes to worse you can use it to rob people. :pirate:

i carried 2000 rounds of .223 to my car without much prob. But i wouldnt have been able to run a mile with it thats for sure. I dont think the point of having 3300 rounds is that you might need to use them all up pretty quick or transport them all over the place. Its so you dont run out in your time of need. As in a TEOTWAWKI sit and 3 mo down the road supplies are slim and outlook is bleak.

Next time go to the range with alot of rounds on you and go up and down the stairs see how much 7.62 will weigh you down. Cause thats the SHTF scenario.

i havent been to a range with a stair case. but i work in construction building highrises. I KNOW what its like to pack real weight up and down stairs. Its not a lot of fun but its not something i would be unable to do i have spent days where all i do is carry 10+ foot long 4x6 up stairs 2 at a time. Or 4 4x4 with steel hardware. I am in no way shape or form a big guy. 5'7 155 anyway that is beside the point, getting bagged down would be pretty stupid in this sit. But to carry even 100-200 rounds on me at any given time would be cakewalk.

Starbucks sucks sh*t.....

TDC

sure does.

If S really does HTF - I'm stealing a LAVIII [and stealing a driver ;) ].

One man lone actor visions are RTFO -- I dont care if your fricken Audie Murphy, one man with a gun in a survival situation is not good odds.

If your truly paranoid (and sometimes yes everyone is out to get you) and are concerned about surviving the end of the world - its going to bankrupt you preparing for it. Even communal preparations would be astrometric (I may have looked into this once ;) )

www.missilebases.com

A good place to start for your compound

of course add in power, water, weapons etc.

You pretty much need to win the loto just the be well prepared for the end...

Well I am pretty prepared training and equipment related, but I dont fool myself one bit that I could survive as a lone actor even with the GF who is a medic --

If Zombies did rise I'd try to fight our way to the local RCMP detachment -and bunker in with them -- I have a feeling they'd appreciate the extra firepower ;)

Not necessarily. I'm prepared for the end and it cost me under $100. Condoms, a 40 of rye, and roofies.

Well if the ice storm of 98 was any preparation, I'd say grab the SKS, the .22's, and the 870 as well as any ammo I have at hand, along with whatever food water, clothing and other gear I can fit in my car then get the hell outta dodge (as in as far away from any town of more than 1000 people I can drive to with whatever gas is in the tank). That goes for anything from a natural disaster, to a massive epidemic, to a terrorist WMD attack to an invasion by some foreign country coming after (name your natural ressource). The point is that there is a very narrow window where you have to decide to either hunker down or flee, wait too long and flight will simply no longer be an option (clogged up roads, roadbloacks, whatever).

...TEOTWAWKI...

10 rounders!?! WTF? In a Teotwawki, I have a charged up DeWalt 18v cordless drill and a bit just perfect for removing rivets. Should take 2 minutes, tops.

I don't want to be a partypooper but I'll add my buck of five to this thread. If something like it happen one day be sure that the govt will disarm all the population, and they have the perfect tool for that. Just take a look on what happen during katrina crisis... it's my way to see that, maybe I'm too pesimist.

We've all learned from the Katrina experience. If something like that were to happen here there would be a ####load of firearms that simply get picked up a blown away by the wind. ;)

That what the RCMP officers are for -- you want mags - you drill them.
We fine is they are slow zombies -- otherwise we are hooped...
