Who uses binoculars for hunting?

Actually, I've been having friends and hunting partners look at me strangely for a couple of decades now when I tell them I don't use boniculars at all. I always figured, why spend the money on 8x or 10x binos when I've got a 3-9x scope right on my rifle anyways. I use my scope 95% of the time to look around; if something is really, really far, I've got a compact spotting scope I can quickly pull out.

I have to agree, I have spotted more legs and other parts of game that the eye by it's self would not see at different ranges before they see you, anyone who does not use binos has had game walk off without them knowing it whether they think so or not.

By far and away THE most important piece of equipment a hunter can own.
 
I always have my binoculars on me, steiner predator 8x30, great binos for the money.

I dont approve of people that "scope" things out with their rifle

Please tell me this is a joke. Or were you seeing those people looking at you "strangely" while you pointed your gun at them as you "look around" with your scope. Are you f**king nuts?

I only hope that if, or when, you ruin someone else's life due to this insanely unsafe practice, it's because they smoke you and have to explain themselves, rather than because you have an A.D. while sightseeing with a loaded rifle.

Always!
Just use cheapo's cause then I won't mind when I lose them. Not IF I lose them, but WHEN. Don't actually use them all the time, but sure appreciate having them when I need them. They're small and light enough I don't mind carrying them with me.
 
I use a pair of zeiss 10x40 classics.Unfortunately most people that won't carry binoculars resort to the unsafe and irresponsible practice of using their riflescope to glass with.I don't take kindly to some idiot pointing a rifle at me to see what or who I am.

Seriously, do you want to be criminally charged? Trust me if you ever point a rifle at me, you'll be explaining that dumbass comment to a judge, heaven or earth, your choice. Good grief man. Grab a Criminal Code of Canada and read up on Pointing a Firearm. Not trying to be rude, just getting the point across.
 
Once I hunted for moose in Northern Alberta, and our party never got one.

But one thing I remember vividly, moose hunters in a motor boat, cruising up and down the lake, and of the two "hunters" in the boat, the one in the bow was always using his riflescope to scout the shoreline for moose!!:eek: :eek:

You can imagine how we felt about that.:mad: :mad: :mad: :mad:
 
Aside from the obvious reason why one should not use a rifle scope; any kind of moncular, be it range finder,spotting scope or even a 3x9 mounted to a rifle falls far short as a tool for quickly scanning large areas for game. I would estimate my partner and I spent the better part of an hour and a half each day with the binos up over the last 4 days. Try that with a rifle, indeed even light weight bino's get heavy after 20 minutes.
 
Can't imagine hunting without binos. I have nightmares about forgetting my binos for a hunt. Essential in the West not only for spotting/evaluateing but we gernerally have to count tines on everything. I use 8 x 30 Swarovskies and 10 x 40 Ziess. Yes you can certainly get by with inexpensive glasses but if you use your glasses as much as I do, money spent on optics is well spent. I watched a very large Mulie walk away from me last week through my glasses. He had to have 4 pts. At 26-28" and super thick you'd expect he did have 4. Through my 10 powers I had a very good view as he walked away and didn't present a side view at all.
 
I bought a cheap pair of Bushnells from Walmart and let me tell ya, they really suck. Can't focus on anything cause I am too busy shaking and getting dizzy looking through them. I would like to buy a good pair of binos for under $500 if that is possible. I am convinced that I miss seeing some game without them.
 
About a year or so ago, we've participated in a thread that dealt with "what would you do if scoped". Needless to say, there were some pretty stupid feedback, but we all seemed to agree on one thing for sure....scoping someone just because you didn't pack a set of binocs was pretty stupid and could lead to some devastating circumstances. I've talked privately to Northman999 and he seemed like a pretty reasonable and decent sort. Having said that, I would hope that he worded his response incorrectly and didn't really voice his response as he meant it, Lord knows I've done that too. But bottom line is, if you can't afford binocs, even an inexpensive set, you certainly don't belong out there. Now, maybe Northman999 might want to either explain himself and give some serious thoughts to his statement, because believe me when I say that scoping me and I find out might just leave one picking up his Chicklets off the ground. ;)

Anyone that points a rifle at another person to see who or what he is, deserves to have all of his teeth removed with a fist or another suitable object.It is not only unsafe,it is a federal offense.
 
I use a set of No2 CDN MK 2/5 RELs from the 40's.

They have a handy built in rangefinder, and I could beat a Bear to death with them. :)
