I'm looking for a bolt gun in a .50 or close to it in the design similar to a Barret 99 or 95. I'm looking for anyone who can point me to a military style configuration in a massive big bore to hunt long range with. If I'm gonna spend that kind of cash its got to be for more than the range to punch paper.
I've read 50 BMG is not legal for the woods....is there something that's close to it that can be used for sport?

And the all important question, can you eat right up to the hole like other big bores. Granted, you could probalby throw a cat thru the exit hole made by a 50 BMG.

I don't see the problem, you can hunt with the various .50 cal. sharps...the 50/70, 50/90, 50/140, the latter two are also great long range cals.....recoil and firearm weight may be the only limiting factors.

Giant 50 cal exit holes are imaginary. Very few animals are made of enough stuff to allow a 50cal bullet to expand.

Wouldn't that depend on the bullet design. Granted the FJM bullet the military use probably don't expand much, but hollow point, or ballistic tip 50 cal ammo probably would. No?

Bullets meant for the .50 BMG are made not to expand(J-word bullets), soft cast bullets in the .50cal. Sharps cals. expand very nicely, and leave some huge exit holes. In the day of the Buffalo, hunters wanted their slugs to flatten out like a big coin, so it would just stop under the skin on the far side and they could reuse the lead as it was in short supply on the frontier.

I 'm enjoying the comments! I still need someone to tell me if and what I can buy. Any ideas, I'm hoping for an HS or Barret style bolt/mag fed.

Ahhh, but if you did get rapidly expanding .50 varmint type ammo. :ban: Seekers of the red mist only with Moose

Put that on Youtube.

I just got an e-mail from Wolverine Supplies, they have what I'm looking for in stock. Steyr HS50. Its expensive, but its a 50! I saw the comment about the .270 being a Max caliber. I think that actually a minimum. I here certain folks talk about my area banning rifle and reducing us to shotgun and muzzle loader hunting only. Nothing serious, mostly rumours.

I have never heard of that. I live in South Eastern Ontario and I had only heard of Rifle YES and Rifle NO zones. Even a small few that used to be BOW ONLY and are now BOW and SHOTGUN.

if your hunting large game you can use any rifle you want the 270 rule is out of season BS i am pretty sure a 270 magnum has allot longer range then a 7.62x39 but we have morons for government which is why i vote we rename it morontario

I know at one time they had a maximum caliber rule in some parts of southern Ontario, but i'm not sure now.
best to check your regs down there....
