We don't fish the spawn but we hunt the rut?

Why is it that culturally we frown down upon fishing the spawn, and regulations don't allow, but yet we're allowed to hunt the rut?

Are there places where only pre-rut or post-rut hunts are allowed according to local regulations? I don't remember where, but I think some american states only start their deer season in december? I could be wrong though...

If you want to eat the meat the "RUT" is the worst time to harvest a Buck or Bull...but if you're after a trophy grade animal, its the best time.

We hunt the rut to have a better chance at the males. Killing males has very little effect on population sustainability for most species.

Disagree with that one, I shot a big rutted up WT buck this November and he was just as tasty as any pre rutt buck or doe I’ve eaten.

I also helped a friend kill and process an intact male goat in November or December, if you’ve ever been around an intact male goat you’ll know how rank they get. Especially during the fall rutt, being extra cautious to remove any hair from the dressed out carcass is the most important part of ending up with edible meat. My buddy gave me a hind quarters for the help and the meat is great tasting, I’ve eaten a fair bit of goat over the years and you would never know this was from a pissy stinky rutting buck lol.

How clean you handle the meat while skinning is a huge factor, no matter what the animal. The only exception to this I’ve experienced is snowshoe hare late in April, talk about tainted meat. The dogs wouldn’t even go near it lol.

Yeah, he probably had his nuts cut off or inactive...lol

Fishing for salmon in the river is fishing the spawn. So yeah, lots of us are fishing the spawn...

Exactly.

Besides that, there is good reason why we can have rifle seasons in the rut: We have enough of the resource in comparison to the demand on it. A lot of states have very short rifle seasons - only one or two weeks with the rest of the hunting season being bow only, maybe throw in a few weeks of muzzleloader season. This is because the demand on the resource is too great to allow for longer rifle seasons.

For deer at least, there are a ton of them. I remember seeing a statistic saying that the people who track the numbers think there are more deer around now than there were during the fur trading days despite the number of hunters in North America (I saw this stat a couple years ago, and never fact checked it so I'm not 100% sure). At any rate, there are A LOT of deer, and I know tags are given out to at least keep the numbers as they are, if not to diminish them slightly. Fishing is harder to control, as you can keep a certain number, and that number is much higher than the numbers you can keep compared to deer. It's also easier to poach fish than deer just because of the size. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's better to let fish spawn uninterrupted than let deer spawn uninterrupted, especially if you factor in car accidents. It's much harder to hit a fish with your car than it is to hit a deer!

I think fishing the spawn is the equivalent of hunting the spring fawning period.

I cringe each fall when bow season starts the end of August when the bucks are still in velvet and never got to breed...What a waste of genetics...Especially the way some bow hunters keep sticking them till they finally collect.

Jables got it, population control is through culling of females, trophies are males, and most tags are given for males. A post rut hunt makes males more difficult to identify and when's the last time you saw a fisherman ### his salmon?

This is your correct answer.

Yes that does make a lot of sense. I guess the question is blurred in my mind cause in my area we can tag 2 does each season. It's counter intuitive but I'm starting to keep track of hunting statistics and we're starting to see an uptick in bucks harvested with double doe-tag being filled by hunters (zero buck for those hunters).

You can fish the pike spawn in the peace and the action is hot and heavy on a streamer

Tons of guys fishing burbot spawn if they know it or not.

Spawned our salmon has never been to my taste but a few years ago a friend gave me some fished by a band near PG. Surprisingly good.
