hey have any of You guys on here heard of Hog deer?

they are a very tiny little deer live on the coastal south east of Victoria...

they have a small season and are hard to find!

i missed out on the Ballot spots for the islands, but just discovered how to get a Tag for public land!

Got a Doe and a Stag tag!

April only!

The type of hunting and where they live is very different to my norm, so since the fires i think i will concentrate over on the Hog deer instead, which is the same period the Fallow deer rut.

i will try get a thread together when i maybe have a photo of one to show you guys! apparently fairly elusive and hard to find in the day to shoot....

google them up "Hog Deer" , they look like a miniture Sambar!

a 243 would be perfect, so i will use my 7mm08 and likely the 162SST bubllet , an expect shots to be well under 100m, from sit and wait ambush sites!!

Cool! Never heard of these before. Google tells me their native range runs from Pakistan to Myanmar. Those Brits really liked transporting deer to other places! Hope you can be successful so we can see some pictures!

For sure mate,
yep these little guys also get a hammering from the National Parks department , on the islands.. about 3000 people enter for 168 spots over the 4 weeks or some crap.. so they erected a 5 million dollar fence to keep the deer out of specific areas LOL.... long story.

yeah so this will be a interesting one, going to have to do alot of home work, unlike just walking out the back door, per say..... youtube shows the sort of country they are livin in.... not a hunters friend-

im already thinking a small 'blind' type tent i can move around an even sleep in on location, hear night noises and perhaps get a looksee without walkin around or into a location each morning! an huntin a different area in the afternoons-

Ladders for trees r good idea- i might look into some Pegs? hmm

Curious why the short season if they are actively culling them?

Safety concern in parks?

good question, its a bit of a trend at the moment, culling ducks, shorten season, culling deer cant see game licenses goin away or areas opening, culling these little deer in touristsy parks down south that dont allow hunting except this april period due to these deer.... the ballots r the go on the islands nearby for the stags and hunting pressure non existant per say, this public land thing might be a bit of a joke? altho i didnt pay for a tag yet just travel etc.. so no big loss .

hunting in the national parks in victoria is a bit hit an miss in which ones ya can an cant an what ya can shoot in there, mostly sambar deers only in most.
an they close over the summer holidays for hunting due to tourists/hikers etc. an even these coastal parks seldom see people outside the carparks..

from what i gather there isnt a great vast expanse of area to hunt them, more like strips and blocks along the coast?

our Govts backwards at the moment with the hunting and the culling and going forward.

my first ever "deer tags" turned up today!
less than 2 weeks til season starts , it is a good 8 hour drive away for me to get into the areas- keen for a week trip first up i rekon!

Is that the Muntjac? If so, they are destructive little buggers. The Brits are culling them as well. Open season for a shooter with land access.

nah mate, they are Hog Deer...
nothing too destructive about these little critters and they live in the coastal region down here.. so some hobby farmers with 5acres get upset when they come in, but are greenies so dont shoot them.

Rightio! 3 Days out from Opening of the Season for these Hog deer!
iv been doin a fair bit of google scouting but it will not prepare me for the 'coastal scrub ' i believe!

My 7mm 08 Kimber is sighted ready to rock and roll in some sort of sit and wait situation! more than likely real close!

Camo and mesh mosquito nets ready to roll out!

im pretty excited haha!

they rekon i wont see one and all that jazz........ still have alot of anticipation for the hunting ahead, certainly a different type of hunting, sit and wait will be the scenerio i rekon! maybe even build a bush blind if i find a nice water hole perhaps!

may have company as of next monday for a hunt or two i think, not sure how long they will stick around once face to face with the bush haha!!

will certainly take lots of photos for a report back

Update back from 1st Trip write up to come.
Photos for now... amazing.

Skull damaged Coronet damage and some fair age to him!

my video shows much more, il share when published.

Hope you enjoyed as much as i did!!

Oh many WhelanLad, you dumped him in the thick of it!

That looks like a hell of a pile of work to get that Sambar stag out, need some details on that ordeal!

Cheers

Fellas, that is going to be an interesting conversation around that i rekon, especially the culture differences and Canada and Australia differences in General.

i'll give yas the Run down within the Week, an see where that goes.. i think it will be a worthy arguement lol.

bare with me, i got like two mornings bar tomorow, to get some atleast Decent footage of some grunting bucks before my son arrives on holiday! in which we may still hunt but not as seriously as i would solo.

Ok so i have Ten minutes to sit down an write this one out.

Heres what happened , and Why.

So i see this Deer out in the field and im not 100% sure if its these Tiny deer or what... I hadnt by then seen Sambar in this environment to gauge from and thought knowing my luck it will walk into the thicker Marsh and it would be a prized Hog deer...

So (this is where it can get interesting pending mindset already)

I set up to Shoot this Deer.

Not thinking about- The possibility the marsh gets Deeper, There is not 'higher ground' toward the animal, What if it runs off into the taller marsh, and What happens if its not a Trophy animal , And something to Factor in is With the HOG deer themselves (50kg), with the Tag, I must take the whole animal to the checking station after harvest..

With Note- Being in Australia, the way the rules and Regs percieve these Animals leans well toward the "Pest" end of the spectrum in which, i mean, there is NO real strict and religious "laws" around killing one these days, inside of 'Common sense' persay : Now Sambar are a "game animal" an i can only hunt with permit,in certain areas, with a certain type of gun in standard hunting hours mostly in the name of a fair chase hunt...
to elaborate somewhat, We do not have Tags and we do not have Game officers or the like...... maybe 3.
we have no rule about taking anything off the carcass, which is a very respectable differing of opinions for majority of You guys from the Hunting world of Canada and the States etc..
happy to answer anything specific regarding any of this side of life here.

So..
I think, If it is a Hog, Sweet as!.... shoot it, get a bit wet , carry or slide it out later in the day....

Bang, Wack, splash splash, ####..gota go find it. go over there, still alive, honk, takes off i kill it , thinking ive injured it first shot (video seems good hit- animal doesnt)

bang its dead, #### that was unreal... but .

BUT
now what, what the ####.. its a mature sambar stag, but it has a deformed damaged coronet and skull, its not a trophy, its rutty and its 180+kg and in the middle of a Swamp.....

elation for 10 mins ...hunters remorse for half an hour..
what next?

My situation-
Vehicle based 30 mins from nearest store, im 5 hours from Home and know no one at all here, Ive got enough meat and supplies for the week and no real esky /cooler to contain the meat for the remaining 5 days ... its not a trophy to skin out, nor a skull to take, ......

i took its Antlers off and left it out in the Marsh.

Why did I do this.

National Parks Victoria organisation have in the past 12 months Spent millions of Public citizen Donated Funds for Bushfire recovery handed down by the Government in some Fkd up way wich allowed Aerial culling across the whole Parks in the state, favoured hunting areas, historic areas, non problem areas........... hunters were not a piece of the puzzle and it was a kick in the guts.
lots of whinging not much backlash, but we tried to rally the troops a bit...

So i am in a Coastal area a hundred K from the mtns and its in Hog deer terrortory prior to the arrival of Sambar in the area (10yrs) an getting thicker they push the smaller deer out........

hunters remorse was soon settled the following morning as i filmed 9, Yes 9 sambar deer across the marsh in different areas but infront of my 180 field of view........ wow. but i did not see any Hog deer, altho maybe a handful of sign...

my thoughts then felt better due to the Australian culture somewhat, I killed A Big Deer, in little Deer country, in my effort to help reclaim the area for the lil deer.... i will target a hind or two next trip for this fact.
as i know there is many or enough Sambar.

Although the arguement can be that I wasted that particular Deer........... in the future i did not just kill another in the middle of the marshes, and i have since met like minded hunters in the area who WILL take meat from a Carcass to utilise any future harvest of whatever Deer.. bonus.

the dingos and foxes in which i seen many tracks, will clean up the carcass, as will the sea eagles, an not take the Victoria Parks 1080 baits :)

So quite a few downers here for your culture, altho after a night of hunters remorse due to my hunting itself maturing an trying to really take on much different cultures to ensure i appreciate an also conserve what it is i am hunting seeing as the Govt is very much against the live off the land and firearms in civilians arms a big no no , we are going to be fighting for our previlidges very soon and finally the bushfires cleaned up so many of the deer they simply are not a problem anymore, so the excessive culling, does not need my 'help' what so ever, the Deer do.

hope ya understand.
Cheers
Rhys.

Interesting take WhelanLad. I will guess that there will be some that are offended by your decision, and others who would do the same here if allowed. In the specific circumstances you describe, I would probably have taken the shot, though the backstraps and hanging tenderloins would have accompanied me back out.

For us in NA, the big difference is that there are very few non-native game species (at least as far as mammals go... we do like our pheasants, hungarian partridge, chukars and transplanted turkeys!), so most look at deer as a valuable public resource... unfortunately though, probably not enough of us.

Thanks for sharing your pics, and your thoughts. Always interesting!

Cheers

cheers pudle an good one for understanding that lol!

So tomorow i am trekking back down the country another 4-6 hours and hitting the coast in another section of the south eastern corner of Victoria!

still got two tags and about 8 days to fullfil one, if im lucky..

this is another game reserve which is open for April only, not a very large parcel of land but most reports are the deer have been a bit nocturnal , so its time to think out the square a bit and do some all day sits especially toward end of the season!

got a buddy from Melbourne coming to try his luck aswell for this weekend, then ill move back into another area for the final few days!

fingers are crossed and i believe sambar will be alot thinner on the ground thus could be a higher chance of hog deer in the area!

will report back
