I need some help making a decision. I just traded for a Colt Delta Elite and I found out that my hands do not fit the 1911 platform at all. The frame/safety digs into my thumb join with every shot and I can't get through a single magazine without sharp pain. So rather than toughening up I decided to trade it off. I do want to get something else in 10mm Auto though. Right now I am torn between a S&W 610 and the Springfield XD-M in 10mm.

I like the 610 because I don't have to chase brass and they offer it in a 6" version, but I already have a 686+, 357 Mag 7 shots. I know the 10mm is a bit more powerful than the 357, so there is that, but I don't shoot full power loads out of my 686+ because I do not want to deal with the flame cutting problem. Does the 610 have flame cutting issues?

The Springfield XD-M is my other choice because, according to the Internet, it is one of the only pistols in 10mm that has a fully supported chamber. Good for brass longevity, but it is a pistol so brass chansing is going to be part of the game. Being that the XD-M is a Springfield product is it just a plastic 1911 that will give me the same problem as the Delta Elite?

I'd appreciate some opinions.

FWIW I’ve never heard of the 686 having much of a flame cutting problem, and since the 610 is built on the larger N frame you shouldn’t have much of a problem. That said, I think you hit the nail on the head—it won’t be that different than your 686. Regarding the XD-M, even though Springfield sells it alongside 1911s it comes from a completely different lineage, originally based on the Croatian HS2000. There’s no guarantee it’d fit your hand, but if it doesn’t, it won’t be because 1911s don’t. Myself, if I was looking for a second 10mm I’d also take a hard look at SIGs P220 offerings.

Flame cutting stops almost as fast as it starts. I would also recommend a Glock over anything else but you'd be well off trying one out first.

If you do look at a Glock 20, make sure it is the Gen 4 unless you have gargantuan hands. The older gens of Glock 20/21 had grips like 2 x 4's, Gen 4 much better.

I too have the big paw/stubby finger issue that prevents me from enjoying 1911's. Oddly I fit 2011's better.

I have the GLOCK 40 in 10mmAUTO and the S&W 610 in 10mm AUTO as well as others in 10mm.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the G40 in 10mm. it is dead nuts accurate, best GLOCK trigger i have felt, and it is a well balanced firearm with the perfect weight. A joy to use, and handles full power loads well.

The Smith 610. What a GREAT choice. BUT... and this is a big one. There is less felt recoil. It's almost boring to shoot if that makes sense. It is also heavier than the G20 and G40. It is also accurate, though if you shoot 40 through it, you will wonder if you had a squib the first few rounds because it is quiet.

Glock G20. Meh. Had one, it was O.K. Nothing like the G40 at all in terms of handling. It is snappier, not nearly as well balanced, and I place it below the Smith in terms of feel good factor.

Ruger GP. Great gun. Hard to find much fault really, but it does mimic the 610 in terms of low recoil.

Springfield XD-M. Sold it. Uncomfortable resonance/vibration in it while shooting. Not a fan. at all. Sold after 2 mags through it. Personally I did not like the fit, and its accuracy compared to the others was lacking.

Just my opinions, I still own the SMith 610, Ruger and GLOCK G40 if that tells you anything.

Glock 20 was horrible, huge grip, poor grouping probably due to the size of the grip causing control issues, sold it after a couple range trips. XDM has a much better fit and feel, accuracy is probably as good as you can get from a polymer in 10mm. Im not a 1911 fan either nor do I care for the Sig 220's, I had a match elite in 45 and it was junk right out of the box, so the only other 10mm id probably consider would be something steel framed from Tanfoglio / EA Witness.

Thank you for all of the advice. I decided to go with the 610 for two reasons. The first was that I didn't realize the 610 is an N frame, as opposed to the L framed 686+ I already own. I don't have a N frame so the 610 checks that box. The second reason was the brass chasing. I decided the brass is difficult enough to source that I'm going to take the path of the brass miser.

Thanks again!

You can have your cylinder reamed for 10mm magnum. People compare the 10mm to .41 Magnum but I consider that a stretch. The 10mm magnum closes that gap and produces quite a lot of energy... Brass is available from Starline. Just an FYI in case you are into odd things like I am.

Whoa whoa whoa. Waaaait a minute. There is such a thing as 10mm Magnum!

I guess it's time to do some research.

Good luck with your search for a S&W 610, I hope you can find one.
I wanted to get one in the past but was not able to find one, then Ruger came out with the GP100 in 10 mm so I ended up with the Ruger and I am happy with it.
I find that the Ruger moon clips load and unload much easier than the S&W ones I use in my S&W 625, although the BMT mooner makes it much easier to load and unload the S&W moon clips now.

I've already found one. Lightly used. I was extremely lucky.

Great, have fun with it.
Check out the BMT mooner for loading and unloading, I wish I had done it sooner as it makes loading and unloading much easier.

Big S&W 610 fan here.

I bought a second one for $899 from a local dealer. I held both for a while and than decided to sell it on EE. Turns out someone had changed the bbl to 5" from 6 1/2 inch. My buyer flipped a lid and demanded his money back. So the dealer I bought it from could not get the reg. certificate changed and bought it back. The gun was perfect. They sold it for $799 I think, could have been $699 memory a little fuzzy. Good deal for someone. The new bbl was stock just 5" and reg certificate was 6 1/2 inch.
