270 Winchester for bull elk

Myself I am of the novice belief the 270 especially/preferably with premium bullets is suitable for the task at reasonable distances.

I would more likely fear carting out my harvested elk in the high timber. This is when that 6.8mm bore might be a tad bit too small for a long mountain walk over shale scree and granite boulders.

Barry- His posting was in Aug - 2018 - Tod was Very inexperienced then BUT now HAS gained a tremendous amount of Knowledge :p ALL in less then 3 years  RJ

I think he loves my 270 Winchester Magnum. I wouldn't be surprised that he would like to buy it, for the purpose of elk hunting.........right Tod?!?!;););)

If people would quit shooting Elk around the edges these nonsensical myths would go away.

I would have to agree to a point. I've killed elk with many different calibers from 243- 7mm std/mag - 30 cal std/magnums and 45-70. Most were quick 1-2 shot kills two were not. 1 was a cow elk at 50 yds with the 45-70. The 350 gr hornady RN Blew a hole in her side just behind her leg large enough to suck her entire lung outside her body. She made it 200 yards into thick stuff before I managed to get a second in her to finish. Other was a bull elk @ 120 yds with a 308 shooting 168gr tips. Took two through the lungs that both exited then another at 70 yds through the shoulder( kinda low) and still ran another 90 yds before piling up. My experience is sometimes for no apparent reason a critter just has a stronger will to live than others.
Have had a couple cow elk harvested with a 243 from 80-250 yds without incident....
Definitely shooting around the edges puts you at much greater risk of losing your elk though

My newest elk rifle.
Because life is too short to hunt with an ugly rifle.

270 Winchester Shot Show Special.
Checkering and chambering a salute to O'Conner.
I think it will do the trick with 150 grain Ballistic Tips.

Beautiful rifle! I was thinking of purchasing one that was for sale on EE, however targeted another rifle instead. A 150gr. Partition would be a better choice for elk.
