270 Winchester for bull elk

Once I had to spend an unplanned night out in the mountains. I was carrying a .270 with 150 gr Nosler Partitions. Fortunately earlier that day I had shot 2 grouse in their heads with the 270 so I had something to roast by the fire.

Fricken DECAPITATED them! That's how hardcore the .270 is.

Yup good for grouse, but the more common 130 grain load would have been just as effective.

270 winchester.......peeeeuuuww.......only reason I have a 270 Winchester in my gun safe is I won a Kimber Mountain Ascent !

Elmer Keith Said the 270 is "a damned adequate coyote rifle"

The reason Jack O'Connor used the 270 Winchester for Sheep Hunting was he was a "recoil pussy" and got scoped using the 300 Wby Mag on a sheep hunt.....after that he stuck to the 270 win and 130gr bullets ;)

Now onto the 270 concerns...........

The "270 Winchester is a marginal cartridge for Elk Hunting"......well lots of variables to respond to that mindset but his concerns are somewhat warranted,

todbartell knows better than most when it comes to Elk Hunting.....this would be his advice, they are a tough thick skinned animal, use a well constructed bullet in your 270 and you'll be fine,

If I was going to use my 270 winchester I would be shooting a well constructed bullet like the Barnes 130gr TTSX,LRX or Hornady GMX, 140/150gr TSX

If people would quit shooting Elk around the edges these nonsensical myths would go away.

A .270 loaded with a copper bullet or a partition will be a better Elk killer than any .30cal loaded with these highly popular high BC VLD bullets that just explode on contact.

My .270 is loaded with 140gr Barnes TSX with 53.5gr of H4350. I just recently got a chronograph and I was surprised to see it's average FPS is 3101.66. I went home that day concerned I over loaded it. Pulled the bullet and weighed the powder charge and sure enough it was 53.5. But the barrel length of my gun is 25" so that might be part of the reason why its so fast.

The 270 is quite over powered for elk. If you shoot one with a big gun like that you ruin too much meat. My grandpa and uncles only ever used old 303’s and one of them had a 30/30 and they killed literally tons of elk. Those less powerful bullets are better for hunting. Like grandpa used to tell me, “if you wait to shoot until you can see them blink you’ll never miss.” Close up those old fashioned guns kill’em right.

I am not a .270 guy in any way at all. I think .270 is a good waste of a potential .30-06 casing - but that being said, the .270 is perfectly fine for elk hunting - especially with a good bonded 140 or 150ish grain bullet. There isn't an elk alive that is bullet proof and where I hunt, truckloads of big elk fall to .270's (and cheap factory ammo).

Good enough fir sure. I’ve killed elk with a 270 and didn’t feel undergunned.
I find this a funny question from a guy with your knowledge of guns, ballistics and bullets

If you think this is a weird question, you don’t know Mark very well.
