Questions about sporterized Lee Enfields

I bought that rifle from Richard, but have since sold it as well. It was a FTR'd 1943 Maltby with an as-new 5 groove barrel. The bayonet lugs were removed.
I joked it was a ".303 Improved" because the chamber was so large and the shoulder so far forward cases looked nothing like when they went in, lol!
I sold it and a really nice 1919 Lithgow sporter for $400 for the pair.
They were both super fun, the Lithgow was butter smooth, and the Maltby was very accurate, but something else came up, so they had to go!

With so many variances with bore & chamber dimensions with the .303 units out there, I've found it better to just do up Lee Enfield sporters in more entertaining chamberings. Using the Brewer system for affixing & headspacing the barrel be me choice on these. Adding a Huber trigger to 'em is a good thing as well.

The commercial conversions like the Parker Hale and Churchill are good rifles. They would be pretty close to what you’re looking for.

Alternatively, you could try to find one of those fake no 5 wood sets and put that on a decent sporter, it would be pretty close to the one Riflechair has.

I’m partial to Longbranch but a converted No4mk2 Faz would make a good quality sporter too.

I made one for my son. 20" barrel. It is a 308, with 308 extractor and ejector.

People on the internet like to say that 303 is prohibitively expensive. Maybe they live in another country. A quality 30-06 round is barely cheaper. And it can be hand loaded for the same price. It’s not a dealbreaker for someone who wants an all steel stalking rifle for half the price of an Axis.

What you can’t get with 303 is a battle pack of plinking ammo for 1$/round

I bought a box 2 years ago at Walmart. The price: $26 before the tax.

The only thing I’ve bought that cheap has been PPU 174gr fmj for $26 a box of 20, which for me is great. It shoots the same poa/poi as the 180gr federal sp I hunt with, I can plink and confirm zero and I get good once fired brass for hand loads. I will shot a couple fmj for confirm zero, let the barrel fully cool and then take a shot or two with the federal sp’s. I just bought a couple more boxes the other day.
