Looking to upgrade my airgun and do some pest management on the farms I hunt on. Maybe a few meals, apparently sparrows are tasty

But looking at the 2021 regs I don't see the passage that was there in previous years, any idea what the status is?

Found this in 2014 Regs:

"In addition, Ontario residents and non-residents may hunt American crow, brown-headed cowbird, red-winged blackbird, common grackle, starling and house sparrow. "

Are you looking at the regulations, or a synopsis of the regulations?

If you're only looking at the synopsis, it might be worth your while to dig up the actual regulations that the synopsis is based on. That is where you will find your answer.

Be careful... there are dozens of sparrow species and only one is fair game... never heard of anyone eating sparrows, but there is a big Italian population here locally and they put a good whacking on the cowbirds and blackbirds every fall for their blackbird pies.

I'm looking at the 114 pg PDF they put out every year. I guess this is fall 2020/spring 2021

The 2014 excerpt from above on page 79:

Magpies definitely. I've had ground and tree nesting song birds in much greater numbers before the Magpies started their unwelcome visits a couple years ago.

As of this year there is no welcome for them, period.

A house sparrow yields two breasts that can easily be eaten in one bite. I ate maybe two dozen when I was a new hunter. Not really worth the effort, but very tasty.

Red winged blackbirds breasts are about a chicken nugget each. Also very good.

Starling, same as above.

Grackles have larger breasts and the meat from 3 birds is good for a meal.

They're all dark meat that's very easily overcooked. I've eaten tons of grackles over the years and they're best with the breasts flattened just enough for consistent thickness, rubbed with montreal steak spice in a hot cast iron pan to med rare to finish at med well. Soooo tender.
