Stainless Parkerizing/Bluing tank ideas?

hi folks,

looking for ideas on what i can use that will hold a standard barreled action for home parkerizing.

so rough dimensions would be 30 inches long by about 4-6 inches wide by about 4-6 inches deep.

i was considering looking around for possibly some stainless steel rain gutter or something and having someone MIG in some endplates, but was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions on a relatively inexpensive source or something i can fabricate one from.

check the scrap yards in a town that has pulp mills,
chem plants and like indusrties . they shound have
stainless pipe . 8 inch pipe with a 4 in strip cut out will leave you with lots of depth

i thought about stainless pipe, but wouldnt it be rediculously expensive? id also need little feet or something welded onto it so it wouldnt roll, and the heat distribution wouldnt be too good over elements (although over something like flame this would be a non-issue).

ill see if my welder has any stainless he can bend up into a tank.

even something like a loaf baking pan, if i could find them in stainless, would work. i could just buy 3-4 of them, cut them and weld them together. problem is theyre usually just teflon coated or some sortof tin crap.

this is basically my main obstacle to being able to park barreled actions. i already have a 4-foot burner setup for it, just need a stainless tank and im good to go.

the idea was SCRAP yard. for just a few $$. u get a peice a
little longer than u need, cut off 2 peices, spit them
flatten them out for the end peices. the scrat peices for legs. this is thicker than that sheet mettal and easier
to weld and will last longer. that thin stuff has to be tig
welder or a wire feed with stainless wire, no common.
this stainnless pipe will be considerbly thicker and
can be welded with stick stainless rod. that what i use
for my anodizeing tanks for anadizeing alumium.
 
Go talk to the nice peoplde in the Metal Convenience shops. They have all kinds of stuff and they'll cut it to whatever size you want.
Plan 'B' would be a steel drum/barrel cut in half. Mind you, the tank isn't the hard part. Controlling the temperatures is.
Bluing and parkerizing are totally different. Parkerizing isn't a big deal, but bluing is. Bluing requires a space with absolutely no other ferrous metals you don't want to rust. The bluing salts get into the air and will cause anything ferrous to rust. So your garage/work shop is very likely out of the question.

i have a custom 4 burner electric stove setup inline. theres a cast plate on top to help with heat distribution. i should be able to control the temperature OK.

mainly i want it for parking barreled actions. bluing in the future perhaps, but i always prefer park to blue on most working firearms (not fine classic ones).

another consideration is you dont want the tank too big because then you require way too much solution/heat/etc.

ill check the scrapyard, my welder and a metal shop on monday.

mike where did you get the buffet cart tray?
 
Not my idea, but it sounds like a good one.

Go to the drywall section at your local home depot. There you will find a stainless drywall tray called the mud bud. Of course if you need 30" than you'll have to buy 3 of them and have them welded together. At 20 bucks a pop you just might be better off having some one weld you up a tank out of stainless.
 
i had a stainless take made up ,18 gauge it was 160.00$
42x6x8
not includng a lid.but the solder had let go it worked fine until the blue was left in it and seams went to pieces.
this was done at a local sheet metal shop.
 
If you are in an area where maple syrup is produced, ask around to see if there is a shop fabricating the evaporators. These are made from stainless. Such a shop could easily make a parking tank.
 
Don't use stainless for hot bluing the chemicals react with the chrome and make a very bad polutant. Chromium I think.
I welded up a square tank out of 1/4" regular steel 6X4X30, and use propane/burner for heat. It works like a charm.

He's talking about parkerizing, not bluing. You must use stainless for parkerizing or your tank will react with the chemicals. I've also heard of people using old crock pots or casserole dishes for small parts.

Actually the title does say "Stainless Parkerizing/Bluing tank ideas? "

... I was also going to say that I thought you could not use SS tanks for bluing too.

Not meaning to Hijack your thread, but how do you get the quote box to show when you quote?

It's easy, just go to the post that you want to quote and click the "quote" button in the bottom right corner of that post. You can erase the stuff that doesn't apply to your use, or highlight what it is that you're referring to.
 
Stainless Parkerizing/Bluing tank ideas....

I don't know what Parkerizing requires but bluing is best done in a plain old black steel tank.... not stainless.

Sorry MBP, I didn't see you ask where I got it. I bought my pan at Value Village second hand store.
Oh and Guntech, parkerizing must be done in a stainless tank, it's a phosphoric acid and manganese dioxide solution.
