I understand there is a great preserve in Shepody NB, PEI has one of the largest Preserves around. In NS I don't know of any, I am sure they exist but why? when you can hunt wold pheasants in NS?

I do n't know where to go either in NS but if you should find a place I have a grouse/duck hunting dog that I know would be a great pheasant hunter... I just can't bring myself to pay $400 a year to hunt hand fed birds! I would rather pay $400 for gas/license and go to NS!
 
I wouldn't bother here in NS... I had a few bad experiences. It was a GD pet-n-shoot. The dog brought back more birds than we shot. We got tired of throwing them back and trying to make them flush before the dog picked them up. From my understanding there there are a few that have the birds on the property before the day you go. My experience was with the preserve that you release them, #### around for an hour and then go after them. Not fun, or sporting in anyway... I would rather run the risk of getting skunked, with or without a dog in the wild... my opinion only, please feel free to try it.

I would exhaust any hunting resources or ties you have (farmers, friends, family...) for some private fields. Check out the valley and just be awful polite when asking/bribing because the farmers see a lot of hunters down that way and turn down a lot of people while letting others hunt for the day... just a few suggestions, Good Luck!
 
I grew up in the Valley, like was said above you have to do your ground work but there are enough farms around that if you ask enough one is going to say yes. Take a drive on a Saturday up the 101 to Wolfville and get off the hwy head up to Port Williams and start talking to the farmers, keep driving west until you find on that will let you hunt there.

I hunted (once so far) the preserve in Shepody and it was no pet-n-shoot. Took me all day to shoot 5 birds and I got the last one while walking to the truck at the end of the day.

I recommend it. In fact, I should do it again. :)

KMD, I used to live in the valley as well, and I'll second you on that. Tons of big fat pheasants in that area. Never did take one myself, but they were always around.
 
Nickr , what breed of dog are you using , are you using an retriever / flushing dog or are you using a pointing breed ?
 
My brother has hunted at a pheasant preserve a couple times near Hampton,NB with his co-worker who is also co-owner of the club.From what he describes,it was fairly decnt sport?I beleive,as mentioned,a guide travels around the property on an ATV,releasing 6 pre-paid for birds for each hunter in the party and you "#### around" for awhile and then hunt over well trained pointers.i beleive they are raised in flight pens and were not shy about getting airborn,in fact,he said the guide told him that they sometimes fly across the K river and off of the property immediately upon release so you may not get "your" birds,but there are always other birds around from previous hunts.

I'm quite sure there is another pheasant preserve outside of Fredericton Off of Hwy #8 I beleive,or at least there once was?

The very best that I have hunted in NB is Hanscomes in Califorina Settlement.
600 acres of Pheasants -- he has both wild and newly released birds -- lets about 500 go on a regular basis starting in June. Hunts are by the day which includes breakfast, lunch and dinner - 2007 cost ran about $300 per day + tips (The guides and kitchen staff work on tips). The guides are great, the food is great, the dogs are great (Brits and a gordon). There is no limit on the # of birds you shoot and you will shoot lots. The birds are cleaned and packed for you. You can choose from several packages. The accomadations are 1st class. I shot 40 birds in 1 1/2 days in September. They serve some big name sports personalites and Famous US actors but remain affordable. I highly recommend them.
