I was thinking of picking one of these up in 308 for bush hunting. I was told the pre 81 model (Japan mfg). Was a better gun than the "new" 81 Model. Is this because of the steel reciever or is there other differences?

Are you really thinking of buying something made in Japan?:p

I have an 81 (308) purchased in 1978. Groups are usually between
1 - 1 1/2" at 100M. Rifle has been very relaible. A buddy had one of later manufacture that had a "plastic" gear....it broke in cold weather. Personally, I would stick to steel components in a receiver.
Made in Japan...like my Toyota...Wish domestics were so well made!

I had a pre 81 but no experience with the later models. It functioned well, never let me down if it was kept clean. The cork screw bolt design is a little goofy but like said keep it clean and its as slick as a swiss clock. Accuracey was around 2 to 2 1/2 moa. Took two deer with it. Not sure why I sold it actually..

Blr

Hi Win64, I have a pre 81 BLR all steel reciever and gears made in Belgium. It shoots 2 inch groups and has never failed me. A wonderfull little gun to carry in the bush.

I've had a couple... one with the straight grip/flush mag & the earlier one with the straight grip & stick out mag. Both were good shooters. Preferred the one with the flush mag. If I ever get a chance to get another one at a good price I wouldn't hesitate.... :cool: And yeah, I prefer the earlier ones with the steel in 'em.... ;)

Thanks NAA. Do you have any idea of the weight of the rifle?

My father has a Browning BLR Model '81 Light Weight, in the .308.

I has the gold trigger, and fore sight. It's a very nice rifle, the lever action is short and tight. It has Weaver mounts (flip down scope.) The gun is a bush rifle, so it as a fairly short barrel, but it's handy in the wood, and isn't a pain to carry.

His is also made in Japan, bit it also says something about Utah and Montreal on it.

I have a 257 Roberts and have had no problems with it.
It is a 227 series with a flush mag. and a steel receiver.
The lightweights have an aluminum receiver and a fluted bolt with a toggle system on the hammer. I am not fond of it at all.

BLR Types
127=BLR Lever Action
327=Model 81 BLR Long Action
227=Model 81 BLR Short Action

riden,
That would make your rifle a BLR Lightning built after 1998 with the letters MY in the serial #.
Check out the Browning sight you can date most of their rifles.

They can have tight chambers. if you reolad it may be a pain in the a$$, hwever with a little tinkering reolads are possible. Factory ammo should work great.

Use a Small Base Sizer Die for reloading ammunition to be used in automatic, semi-automatic, pump and lever-action rifles. These dies size the body of cases somewhat smaller in diameter and also set the shoulder back slightly more than a full length sizer die to ensure proper functioning in the actions of these rifles. Not recommended for ammunition used in bolt-action rifles.

if you are in the market for a BLR now, you should take a look at the new takedown models. theyre around the same price as the regular BLRs and come apart with the flip of a lever like this:

after seeing these i personally wouldnt even consider a regular BLR unless the price was amazing.
