For my fuddy friends

A lot of hunters aren't actually "gun guys". The gun is just the tool they require. If something else worked, they wouldn't be shooters at all. - dan

And a lot of gun guys are far more interesting in shooting fast and making lots of noise than small groups and making hits at long range...

My favorite fudd story -
Had a guy put a 3X9 Scope on his A Bolt Medallion 30-06 with see thru scope bases.

His rifle didn't have open sites to use under the see thru rings ???

There was no talking him out of it, his buddy knows everything about guns and that's what he told him to buy "gotta have the see thru rings in case a deer comes in too close for the scope"

Well yeah, dontcha know they work like peep sights? Lol

I'll put my flame suit on, but sometimes one can get away with this; my 303 will shot 2" group with one brand of ammo, but 3" groups with mixed ammo. So pretty much irrelevant on a deer, let alone a moose at that range.

But things like 22-250 or 22 Hornet will shoot different ammo to widely different points of impact.

I have a brother in-law that maintains he can hit a refrigerator at 1000yds with his open sight, Winchester 30-30 trapper. I'm sure he's done it, but I'm not sure he knows how to measure 1000 yards.

at 1000 yds according to gundata.org, a 30-30 shooting 150grain bullet has just over 11 feet of drop. lol ask him how high above the fridge. thats also not taking into account wind, and how accurate his particular rifle is. might not be impossible, but not very probable.

My brother and I went to NFLD for a moose hunt a few years ago, proud as piss he showed me these fancy Winchester cartridges, nickel plated, 150gr red tips that he had brought. I said, those are good bullets, but your rifle is sighted for 180gr Federals. Shook my head. Luckily, he shot a bull at 75yds.

I've noticed many hunters have quick release mounts on their rifles, with no open sights/irons..........go figure.

I actually tested something similar. After working up a load for my 270win, I grabbed the box of Rem CoreLokt I had sitting in my ammo can and tried it to see what it was doing. 2" high, but pretty bang on left-to-right. Good to know, if I need to buy factory ammo for whatever reason I at least have a good idea of what the Rem CoreLokt 130gr will do.

i love fudd lore. had a guy tell me the other day his friend shot moose "all the time" at 400m with 30-30 lever action and open sights, the legend goes he would hold 4ft above its back, followed by the typical "dropped it right in his tracks everytime". the store clerk then asked him how far the store exit was in yards. he said 125yds the clerk informed him it was 60 lol. so it totally discredited his story.

60 yards from gun counter to exit is a big store. I find the bigger the store, the taller the tale patrons of those establishments have

When the conversation turns to group sizes

40 Important things to ask a real "Hunter" at the BBQ or Kid's Hockey when he (and it's always a He) starts talking about how well his rifle groups:

1. How far away was it? - Did you measure it? With what? (laser RF, tape, Mk 1 eyeball)or is it a known distance, like at
a range?

2. How many shots did you take to establish your group? Was it 1,3 or 5 or more? Were they all consecutive shots? Is this
really your group?

3. Is your group part of a bigger group? (fired 5 but 2 were obvious flyers, so were discounted)

4. Did you actually measure your group or estimate it? - What did you measure it with? (calipers, ruler, Mk 1 eyeball) and
how did you measure it?

5. How did you shoot this group? - off a bench? - prone off a bag? - offhand? - backwards through a mirror??

6. Is this the best group you have EVER shot with this rifle? Can you repeat it? On demand? Can you really do this all day,
every day if you do your part?

5. Was there any wind? - What direction? How much? Steady or gusting? Is that something you'd notice?

6. What rifle? - match heavy barrel, sporter or Uncle Neds trusty milsurp that has never let you down?

7. What ammo? - What grain? - What bullet? - Handloads? - High end factory? - Canadian tire? - Garage sale?

8. Anyone else see you do it and witness the target or were you alone? Your mother doesn't count.

9. Can you shoot? Do you have competitive status? - trophies - people that know you to be an excellent shot?

10. Why are you looking at me so strange? Of course I believe you:rolleyes: - unless there's some reason I shouldn't???

Mods are welcome to sticky this:)

i was in cabelas and i asked the fudd behind the counter if the had anything chambered in 300WM. he said "300 win mag? why would you wanna shoot a deer with that? i shot a deer with a 300 win mag once and blew both his front legs off" to which i replied "why did you shoot it in the legs?" he ignored the question and offered to show me a 45/70.. i left

Thanks for the morning chuckle ... that's a very good question.
I've heard similar stories over the years.

This. I would almost say 'most'. If only the hunters would join ranks in protecting our guns. Unfortunately, these guys get to hide safely behind our pistols and black rifles. Their own firearms won't be on the chopping block until after all of ours are gone.

Haha, I'm this guy. If I'm able to offhand mag dump at 100 yards, and have most of my hits anywhere within the circle then I'm happy as heck. For me, the 9" circle IS the bullseye, lol.

It's always funny at the range, when these guys shooting from bench with their holes touching, looking at my target wondering what's broken; but I'm looking at theirs thinking basically the same thing. If that's the setup you require to hit tight groups, then what's the point in doing it. imo.

Bench or belly shooters have a couple disciplines devoted to that. Silhouette is for offhand shooters. 3 gun and prs are kind of in between. How well you shoot should be judged against the discipline closest to what you shoot. Hunter off a bench looks good compared to off hand steel @100 guy, but looks like a fool up against the BR guy messing around building a load. Context is key.

That's funny and is what I'd ask the guy... 400m suddenly became <200m. Typically moose don't drop in their tracks either... unless you shoot them in the head or in another way interrupt the nervous system (spinal cord impact etc.). I'm bored by fudd lore: but the stories such as you told are nice to hear: what compels people to be given to untrue embellishment and hyperbole rather than the simple truth is mysterious. About the only logical explanation is that they suck at sharing anecdotes and experiences that they must compensate with exaggeration... or some just cling to certain aspects of childhood?

I've discovered Fudd lore intensifies with lack of interest shown. It is inversely proportional to general lack of interest from the person listening.

Oh you weren't interested that wopper? Well I've got another even more exciting.

Ha ha ha! lol! Most wouldn't get past Q1. Should be stickied!

Fudd lore....too funny!

Because it’s fun.
