CQ311-- Norinco, should I do it?

I can buy a brand new CQ311 Norinco Ar15 clone for $500. I was going to hold off for a while since I've been buying guns like crazy, but is this too good a deal to pass over? Or should I just wait and get something higher quality? I've done alot of reading on the forum here and I'm still on the fence about them. How hard is it to get different stocks and grips? I searched for most of this info but came up with the same threads over and over. Is the 1:12 barrel really a big deal?

Is this a done deal or should I pass?
 
Buy it, shoot it, sell it and then move up. :)

About the 1 in 12 twist: I don't think its a biggie as most of the ammo out there is 55 grain. Besides, it should work better than other twist barrels should you decide to use a 22 LR conversion kit.

I don't think I'd bother 'upgrading' with extra parts ... this rifle is an inexpensive, accurate and reliable black rifle. The fact that it's ugly is just a bonus .... :p

I understand that the $500 chinese rifle you reffer to is metric. Correct?
It's not impossible to put a CAR stock on that.

Maybe you can save some more money and buy
the chinese non-metric one (imperial)
which will probably get on the Canadian market
at about $850ish and sooner than you expect
(in a matter of weeks).
It will accept all the after-market parts you can think of.

i'm just wondering r u referring to that one that look better built than the cq311, and it has a tac stock ? u know instead of the ugly one on the 311
 
If you have the money to get a better AR. than go for that. But if money is tight, than a Norinco AR is better than no AR at all.
 
Brand new $500 is good if it has the stock (some don't). I put a CAR stock on my buddy's CQ with about 10 minutes work. I witnessed a CQ versus A2 shootout and the CQ was every bit as accurate.
 
I had one but sold it. Wish I hadn't sold it.

Great rifle and never malf'd. I have a Stag now and its cool but that norc was awsome for the money.
 
I had a CQ311, here was my experience:

Cons:
- It can take a while to sell them used.
- They can be modified, but it's not typically easy.
- They only come in one barrel length (20").

Pros:
- Just as precise as any other stock A2 style AR.
- Cheap to buy and cheap(ish) to feed.
- Can be used to fire 22LR due to the slow twist.
 
CQ is the code name for the factory that makes the rifle. They have been making an better looking version of AR-15 for a while, which is M4 style, with USGI compatible parts and properly anodized finish (see picture below). However it has never been imported into Canada.

I wonder whether we were talking about this one.

i just went to lever arms in vancouver
the one with old ugly stock 20inch barrel is 500 dollars
they have another one with m4 style stock, for 1450, same price they are asking for a type 97A,
the one with the m4 stock, has a big round piece covering the front part of the barrel all the way to the muzzle, it is as fat as the handguard...
any idea what that is or for?
haha, at first i thought its a grenade launcher, just like in the picture above, of cuz its not.. .^^
