last saturday we went out in search of squirrels and bunnies but the critters just didnt want to play. saw a ton of tracks and ive never seen so many turkey tracks in my life. there were literally so many tracks in the snow it was impossible to pick out one track among them. the trails were packed down so much that every inch of the trail had a track on it. the side of a knoll about 50 yards long and 15 yards wide was pretty much bare dirt they had it scratched up so much. where they roosted there was spots where there was so many droppings i was slipping walking through it...a pile of crap every inch or 2.
how many turkey could be in this flock? ive seen 18 at once out there before that sounded like a herd of deer running towards me.
not far from that area on a knoll covered in pines i spotted something in the tree which turned out to be 2 coons. buddy shot once with my 12 gauge 3" 1 7/8oz of BB's from about 30 yards and it didnt even phase them so i figured id use my 17hmr. hit the first one too low and sent a bullet through the back of its neck and out its chest creating a nasty hole i could put 4 fingers in
hit the 2nd one right in the back of the head.
i couldnt see the first one when it fell so i assumed it was dead by the way it fell. when we got over to them the large male nearly got ahold of my dogs snout before i finished him off. i was very impressed by the size of the male. between the 3 of us we figured it weighed 30 lbs or more and was by far the biggest coon we have seen and my dad has seen a "couple" coons in his day.
so we dressed them out and it didnt take much calling to convince the crows to come have a look. got one with the 17hmr then headed out. really wish i knew the name of this hand made laminate call i have but the name wore off from being used so much.
