I know this is most likely a long shot here, but does anyone on GunNutz reload for .500 Jeffery with cast bullets.

I have a 450 grain - gas check mold inbound from the US of A

.512 to be sized down to .511 with the gas checks

Im working on it. I have mine built and im currently driving to where it is. When i get there ill get it out shooting.

I plan to use cast bullets like i do in my 460 weatherby.
I havent looked into it yet but ill try and use H4895 as i have piles of it and its awesome in the 460

I shoot a 470gr cast HP gascheck using 73 grains of AA2230 and 5 grains of dacron fill. It gives me 2020fps with good groups and no signs of excess pressure.

Thanks for the comments.

What is your final sizing down to, .511?

I am using a Sako Brown Bear.

It's .512"

Thank you, Sir

Also thanks jethunter, interesting.

I'm a long time serious reloader since I was about 15 years old and that has almost been 48 years now since then.

I enjoy reading articles like this.

They are Gator's, but the mold I will be using is by Accurate, hoping for the best.

They worked with my 50 BMG NOE Mold.

I also have a check maker from my .50 BMG days.

.513 NOE 850 grain 50 BMG

and I have a sheet load of everything under the sun in BMG bullets,,, hmmmmmm!

.500 Jeffery Whisper?

Never tried subsonic. The 660 has to be single-loaded in my Blaser. I was approaching 2000fps and it kicked pretty hard. I let a skinny guy fire it at the range and he looked just like a gelatin block getting drop-kicked.

Speaking of that, it's a lot of fun launching 660gr FMJ's out of the Jeffery.

Hmm, I was wondering if you need a special throat to fire BMG bullets from the Jeffery and I guess you can as long as you single load them.

I've been thinking of building a 500 but instead of a hunting style rifle put it in a chassis like most 50 BMG rifles are. Mostly as a middle finger to Justin. :)

I don't mind single loading. Just need to figure out what sort of action will work for something like this. Hopefully something common to chassis style rifles like a Rem 700 action would work but I don't know enough about the jeffery to know what fits. Maybe a Sako TRG

A longer throat would of course be better. Here's a pic of a 660gr round (next to a .308 round) to show how deep it needs to be seated for use in the Blaser.

Blasers are known for their fairly long throats but the .500J barrel seems to be an exception.

These are the 470gr hollowpoints I'm using as a plinking load. I find they are the best cast bullet yet for my Jeffery.

I've had the problem of jamming the lands with other cast bullets seated at the crimp groove. I hope the Brown Bear has a long throat. Bore rider style bullets are another option if you run into this problem, or trimming your brass back a bit can help.

A standard Mauser 98 action has been used for .500 Jeffery in the past.

Only problem with this calibre, brass casings and dies tend to be on the very $$ side of the world.

It makes sense that since it was designed to fit in a Mauser action it would fit in a 700 action but there seems to be some conflicting ideas about using one. Not surprisingly, most 500 JY rifles are CRF hunting rifles and most CRF hunting rifles don't have chassis systems built for them.

My concept is not exactly a practical one, but gunnutzz..... Laugh2
