Over/Unders... $900 vs 25k?

The difference between the lower priced guns and higher ones is that the lower priced guns won't be as well finished, checkering will likely be machine cut, same for engraving. Mostly, a lower end gun will not handle the volume of shooting that really serious shooters will give them. That doesn't matter to the vast majority of us, so most guns will still be tight and right for several owners. So at that point a person is probably smarter to buy a mid-level Browning or Beretta on the used market and get the best of both worlds.

Is a $3500 over/under a better gun than a $1500 over/under? Both are likely to be quite tight when new. Both will go bang every time and eject the empties. Either one may fit perfectly (or not). The advantages you may get from the more expensive gun......
Long term reliability.
Design, especially of things like trigger assemblies and ejectors.
Function, such as light crisp consistent triggers, properly fitted and regulated choke tubes, smooth non sticky ejectors.
Quality and heat treatment of metal components.
Careful mating and fitting of components.
A rigorous quality control standard.
Many decades, sometimes centuries, of building a reputation, you can't buy that and it is priceless.
Reliable timely manufacturer support when new and years down the road.
Resale value somewhere down the road.
Longevity. How many 30-40-50 year old Berettas, Brownings, Winchesters, SKB's, do you see still giving excellent service? How many no name Spanish or Turkish guns ?
Now you may get all of those things in the less expensive gun gun but the chances are this gun will be deficient in one or more of these areas. Anybody can make a cheap gun ( or any other product), making a good gun requires continual dedication to that standard. I'm not saying that inexpensive guns are poor guns but the more expensive ones from makers like Beretta, Browning, Winchester, Savage and others are on average better in many ways. As in other things in life, you get what you are willing to pay for.
For hunting purposes, casual trap range visits and general all round light duty service the less expensive gun may be the perfect option, particularly for those who are careless of their equipment.
Step up to the $5000 gun and as has been said, you still get the same well proven basic design but with more bling and/or special features for special types of use. Worth it? Well the bling will provide pride of ownership, the special features may provide a few extra targets for a competitor. It's worth it to many people, not to others.
The $10,000-$20,000 and up gun takes you into a completely different world. Here you find beautiful hand crafted safe queens and lifetime quality competition guns for the serious high level competitor. If this is your goal and you can afford to play in these fields there is no other course.
Remember, all these guns are tools and made to do the same tasks, they just approach it from different perspectives. A Chevy Spark will take you to the store for a loaf of bread or six pack of beer just as well as a Cadillac and may last as long and be even more trouble free but Cadillac still sells lots of cars and Cadillac owners almost never trade down to a Spark. Only you can decide what is right for you and even then, 5-10 years down the road your interests and goals are likely to have changed. So why limit yourself to one gun?

Hey guys,

So I’ve been looking at Over/unders this week. I own a Turkey knock off and it’s “ok”

However when I start looking into my high end, which would cap at 5k(not a drop in the bucket for me). I still hear in most reviews, lots of negatives or compromises or things that should be going on with a 5k firearm.

So my main questions are, once you get into the 2K+ market are you just buying prestige at that point or are they really that much better?

Are the people complaining for the sake of complaining, IE: was seriously looking at the Benelli 828U Black, however the reviews were not great and everyone said go with the sport(at 2K more). And the guys reviewing the sport still were not thrilled. And even the D10 has its detractors.

Should I just stick with my $900 knock off and not venture into the land of expensive, only to be left wanting.

Final thought... if you said a gun was 5k and were talking about anything other than an Over/Under or Safari Big bore gun, you would expect perfection, that doesn’t seem the case with these though...

If you're gonna buy expensive, contact Bilozir Fine Guns as they specialize in bringing in the "ferraris of guns", custom handmade italian O/U and they really should be fitted to your build. This is assuming you want $5k and up but they do sell less expensive models.

And you may even get lucky, and have the gun arrive matching the dimensions that were ordered, and having the gun fit. Or the dimensions may not match the dimensions that were ordered, and you paid extra for a shotgun that doesn't fit you, but that you are stuck with. I speak from actual experience where two supposedly custom shotguns did not match the order sheet, and we were stuck with no refund, and he wouldn't order again to get us the shotguns that we paid for. I have spoken with several other people with very similar experiences.

I was also looking at those Benelli 828U's in black but have been shying away for two reasons, I am hung up on a cynergy wicked wing and there is hardly any positive reviews on the gun.

Good luck with your search.

Lots of good advice above. As with most things, law of diminishing returns applies. For me, the value proposition tapers off around the 3k -4k mark, though I do own a nice beretta and I don't regret the extra dollars spent. As stated, I find the used market is a great place to get better bang for buck.

I asked a guy at my club about someone who has a $120K shotty and how does it compare to my BT99. He said both are great guns. Then went on to say, you can drive to Montreal in a Pinto or you can drive there in a Rolls Royce. That sure shut me up!

Is the end of that sentence, “either way you wind up where you don’t want to be” LOL!

Life is too short to be hung up on hideously ugly firearms. Buy the 828 and live without regrets.

I've shot guns that cost $250,000 and didn't like it as much as the $4000 dollar that I was shooting at the time but the reality is that the gun wasn't built for me and I couldn't afford it anyway. The owner however loves the gun and that's the only thing that really matters.

Benelli reputation was not built on double guns.
Hideous 828U is correct, to this old traditionalist.
I don't like the Cynergy either.

Wow, that sucks. Im sorry to hear that. I've only heard good things about Will, wasn't aware of that. I personally have not bought guns from him, only supplies, so my opinion is only worth whatcha paid for it. He should have sent the guns back to be refit for what they cost.

He should have, but he didn't.

I start shooting sporting clays in February, I have a CZ Wingshooter Elite, putting 100 rounds a week thru it. I love the gun but have really caught the bug. I am trading it in on a Citori 725 Sporting I feel that 5k rounds a year I intend to shoot will be better served with the Browning.

If you want to spend real money, check out Ward's gun auction in Edmonton, couple pre bids are more than my truck is worth.
I have had 300.oo and 3000.oo ones, they did the same thing, the birds don't care, but it is just so much smoother.
The real hi end , I just look at. The one I used most was a old 101, fit great. cost 400 or 500.oo at the time.
( that 3k one would be 15K+ these days) custom 2 barrel sheet set in fitted case.
