The Fix rifle, a dream that became a nightmare

Hi everybody,

My first language is french so please, I do apologize for my english.


So I bought a Fix rifle from a good dealer back in March. I did the pre-order and I got the two calibers, .308 and 6.5CM both 16 inch.

The rifle I got is the 6.5 with the brown accents. The .308 barrel came as a spare.


So when I got my stuff, I had a thorough look at everything and the .308 barrel was kind of scratched (see pics below)

So Gravel Agency are the one to provide warranty. No problem, I sent the barrel , they paid for shipping, A+ service, had a new barrel in a couple weeks, very happy.

Inspect the rifle again, just to make sure, still has the 6.5 barrel on it, looks great#.

Allright, so a couple nights back, I decide to swap the 6.5 barrel for the .308 ( I had waited to receive the Fix multitool for the job).

Look up the manual on Q website, open up a beer and I do the job.

When I get to remove the 6.5 barrel!!! SAME EFFING SCRATCHES (NOT HAPPY)

Well WTF is this a joke??

So last friday, I get in touch with Gravel, they will change it, but now I have to pay for shipping.

REALLY NOT HAPPY

So, as we say, Buyers Beware. Unacceptable, and I never had an answer to why the barrel is scratched.

So this rifle was a dream for me, And I like it a lot, but maaaan what a pain in the behind.

I had the dream of buying that rifle as well...
After hearing all the issues with a 6k + Canadian rifle, I decided to go with the MPR by Christensen arms with the carbon barrel and haven’t looked back..

Sorry that you’re having issues, spending as much as you did it should be the gold standard out of the box.

Seems to be both the brand new rifle and the brand new barrel were both scratched in the same place, but now that you mention it I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s their multi tool installing the barrel that caused it, snd they probably fit the barrels to a test gun before selling I’d imagine ?

Both the 6.5 barrel installed on the rifle and the extra .308 barrel had the same marks and scratches.

I think it's from the factory, I don't know why, looks like a broken tool.

Looks like it's the barrel tool itself that's the issue? Or is it the nut? Either way that shouldn't happen on something that expensive.

Don't speak too soon. A member here (Bartok?) burned his MPR barrel out in only a couple hundred rounds and Christensen Arms told him to pound sand on warranty. IIRC it was a creedmoor, so nothing particularly hard on barrels.
 
Is structural damage occurring, or is it just cosmetic?

At the end of the day, rifles are just tools. They are going to get scratched up.

I will agree though that scratches shouldn't be occurring as part of the process of changing a barrel.
 
+1 on this.
All rifle that are other than safe queen end up with scratches. But me too, at that price, I would like to be spotless.
But if the barrel nut end up like this after you switch the barrel yourself - you are back at square one.
 
That minor of a cosmetic blemish is not something I would've even wasted my breath whining about; that's just me, to each his own. Not to say I don't vocalize my share of cynicism.
If you're buying what is essentially a tool, and it does its job diligently and consistently, AND its pleasant on the eyes, its a win. I'm not the kind of guy who would spend half a million on a Lamborghini when I could trick out a trans am with some tasteful patina, that would crush an import, for a fraction of the cost.
 
Is it just me or does it seem like only the brass coloured barrel nut looks scratched?
Is that barrel nut hidden by a handguard?

If yes I wouldn't stress, not like you are going to swap calibers on this every month or so...
Is the barrel nut removable or an integral part of the barrel?

Well, it's a tool allright. But if they mess up the finish so easily, what should I expect from the rest of the rifle? Never any problems like that with any other gun, and I have more than 20.

I'm just pissed and I hope the rest of the rifle will be fine and perform

The brass colored nut is the one they will set in the factory to adjust headspace, the end user like me doesnt touch it. There is another nut, like on a ar platform; a castle nut.

The barrel nut I have to remove and torque is another. It's spotless. Even after my barrel swap.

For the money I saved I can buy a second one, or re barrel it twice at least so, I’m still saying it was a safer bet than the broken by Q

That's the best and worst thing about 'boutique' micro-brands on pretty much anything including rifles. They often come out with the most unique items because they are less constrained by mass production lines. However, it often comes at a price of high dollar, minimal spares/support and occasional quirks with QC (and in this specific case, the assembly portion).

It is cosmetic that is essentially unseen except by you, but you know its there.

Best of luck. If you don't like it, I'm sure some of us, incl myself, would consider buying it from you.
