so im totally a bit bummed on the animal lol, i wish it were a DOE! or at least had hard nubs as mounting like this can be very difficult , but what the hell!!!!

Congratulations, Rhys!!! :) I have been waiting to see this scenario.
What a little deer!. Are they good as table fare? Let us know.
Once again, Great work! Dave.

Congratulations......I’m very happy for you

Thanks for sharing mate!
Thanks man, I was also extremely chuffed with the efforts! no worries at all!

What kind of deer is it exactly? At least its easy to pack out
it is a Hog Deer, - Axis Porcinus - elusive, small bands of them across the south east side of vic! lots about it makes it hard, access, public lands, bush, mozzies lol.

Congratulations, Rhys!!! :) I have been waiting to see this scenario.

Dave, i was treated to a BBQ of some of this Venison the night before i shot my deer and Man!! it was the whitest Venison ive ever seen and the Softest , non gamiest meat that ive been told came off a Hog deer! so i have a full esky of meat and cannot wait to get it in the veggies!
Thanks man, so wrapped!

congrats !!!

thanx for sharing your hunt with us
I love seeing other deer species and that is a really cool looking animal.
The spots down the spine are neat.

Congrats! You mentioned them being elusive, is that due to low numbers, or the terrain they live in makes it hard to get to, or? First I'm hearing of these guys.

hey mate its a combination of things.

illegal shooting out of season an anywhere from golf course to bloody touristy national parks an just paddocks in general... then in the legal hunting areas which a fella like me will be concentrating on is also the same reserves they duck shoot, every other year the duck an deer season is April an so once the shots start at 6am, the deer go to ground or move out into private, and or large tracts of bush occupied by water company which is nothing but asset, so it leads to stepping out of the borders a bit, which is o k for the terrain doesnt lend itself to hunting small deer, often thick, inpenetrable for human, tall tussock to hide a man let alone 2ft tall deer, alot of marsh land , what isnt marsh has 4x4 all over it thermalling an what not, mostly a pressure elusivness and suitable feed within hunting areas lending the deer to be on the edges or in the private etc i did not want to hunt private blocks or land so stuck to public and found them on the edges an due to no duck shooting i could cut them off intersecting the hunting areas per say.

:)
heavier populated areas are under a ballot system an often see more rangers working etc, not isolatd hunting reserves a half hour or more from towns, which lends itself to drive ins, drive outs. all year i believe.

i spooked one a few days before , an it made a few squeels sorta, i wsa walkin around stalking, still hunting, not sitting an waiting over water which is often the succesful way ,but i wanted to do it that harder way, my way, to do it again a little more scouting an proberly sit n wait lol.

they r small so tussock hides them and they are reasonably shy so stay inside the bush edges mostly, if they were like a fallow deer in the same bushes i was hunting , i would almost say id see one every day or two once i found the sign an hunted them.

which wsa half the fun

nicely done congrats will you do a full mount?

nah not a full mount mate, just a standard shoulder mount.
so being its first antlers or somehing , i have to skin the velvet off with the face an tan it then like stitch an glue the velvet around the spikes.. so bit of a stuff up i rekon, in Regards to- wishful of it was a Doe to make easy mount and or a hard knob buck for distinct coronet line.... but i will try something and some up with what i can!

you have to take the whole carcass, whole or field dresses only to a check in station.
so i have all the meat :) an it is delisciously tender and white!!!!
