I am wondering if I can import a handgun from the US to Canada without the barrel and have it sent to a gunsmith for a legal barrel install? Or would I need to have a legal barrel installed prior to import?

I doubt it but its best to be sure !

Ask the Department which issues International Import Certificates which is Global Affairs Canada

Cheers

Probably not - depends on which gun. We had a discussion here recently: the RCMP considers the stripped frame to be prohibited for most prohibited guns.

Your first step is to register the gun with the CFP, the registration certificate will state "stripped frame, prohibited" and a) they will likely refuse to register it to your name b) importation will probably get denied by DFAIT at that stage unless the importer has prohibited importation privileges (I don't know of any, but there should reasonably be some - someone imports prohib pistols for police, etc?).

But maybe you should tell us which gun it is and we can check the FRT - maybe you are lucky and the frame is "restricted" :)

It's probably easiest to have the 105mm+ barrel installed in the US - I have done it when I wanted a px4 in .45 and didn't want the tan SD version.

I have had a Walther PPQ 4" purchased in USA, fitted with 106mm Jarvis barrel, then imported by IRG. Painless, just costs $$

Just head on down to Jane and Finch and you can buy yourself a lovely imported handgun without having to deal with any of that pesky paperwork.

Well I want a Taurus tx22. Unfortunately they stopped producing it with a 4.165" barrel and only have the 4.1" or the larger competition. Cant find anyone that produces longer barrels for it either. I would have to get something custom made. Anyone know who can made a custom barrel for it in the US before I have IRG import it?

Honestly, it is not remotely worth the cost and hassle for that gun, imo. There are better, readily accessible options already here.

I am not sure if anything changed, but about 5 years ago I hand IRG import a stripped Glock frame only for me. It was a brand new Glock 17 frame that I bought from ZEV and had them do some frame modifications done to it in California before shipping to IRG for export/import

If I could get just a frame imported I don't see why they couldnt do a gun without a barrel

The only issue I can see is if you are trying to do it with a gun that in the standard barrel length is prohibited in Canada due to it being too short. For example my Glock 17 frame was no problem because Glock 17's have Canadian legal barrels weather it was bought in Canada or elsewhere it conforms to our laws without changing anything. However if I tried to do the same with a Glcok 19 or 45, it might be an issue because those guns from USA in standard configuration would come with a prohib barrel length, they may require the gun to be set up with a Canadian legal barrel in it before export/import?

On the same import as the 17 frame I also imported a custom complete Glock 19 also, but that I had a custom 106mm barrel made by KKM precision for it that Zev modified and then coated and installed in the complete pistol prior to the export/import so it was not an issue.

ZEV 17 gen 4 has a restricted parent record in the FRT so the frame only is restricted. (FRN 171282)

А Glock 19 frame only can be restricted or prohib depending on generation. There are over a dozen different FRNs.

Well I want a Taurus tx22.

Taurus TX has a restricted parent record FRN 195740 so you _should_ be able to import a stripped frame

Otherwise read here for some examples of frame only guns that are prohib : https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...7-Stripped-pistol-frame-was-deemed-prohibited

I would suggest going with Prophet River instead of IRG. Simply because IRG can tell you they will import something then say "oops" we actually can't and won't refund your fee. Do you have a gunsmith lined up here in Canada for the work? If not you will still get better options in the US. I'd ask on a Taurus forum for references.
