Best (shortest?) pump for travel?

Okay...so an 18" is the shortest barrel you can have.

That means with a conventional pump action, you are good to go in terms of a folder or pistol grip stock. 100% legal as far as our firearms laws go, given that your OAL will be over 26". An 18" 870 with a top folder (or even a Knoxx SpecOps folder) would fit the bill, but you'd need a tall backpack. You're probably looking about 30" total.

As far as actual take-down models...I don't have any first-hand knowledge.

Legal as far as our laws go... but they won't let me into the US with that gun. No folder, just basic shoulder stocks allowed. Not even pistol grips.

Well that makes things inconvenient for you.

The 870 isn't exactly a takedown shotgun, but it's not exactly rocket science to take the barrel off...and as another poster suggested, the SpecOps stock is shorter when fully collapsed than the regular stock. If you're on a budget, you can buy the SpecOps NRS (no recoil reduction) stock. Not an ideal combination, but that's the best idea I can come up with from my first-hand knowledge.

That combination of mandatory non-compact stock and 18" barrel sure does limit your choice when it comes to a compact pump action.

Actually, pulling he barrel off of a stock 870 does shorten it...that's why they ship from the Remington with the barrel off.

Yes, all of the tacticool 870's you see in pics on the board have mag extensions that make the mag tube the same length as the barrel...but a stock 870 express has a mag tube that only sticks out a few inches beyond the travel path of the fore-end. In other words, it's mag tube protrudes about as far as a 10.5" barrel would...which means that removing the barrel would shorten the "packed" 18" shotgun by about 7 inches. You can also thread your mag tube cap back onto the end of the mag without the barrel being present, which will prevent losing parts or getting crud into the mag tube.

Not as quick or easy as a true take-down, but simple enough that a well trained primate could manage it in about 20 seconds. Just be aware that your bolt will be to the rear, and not locked into place as it would be if it were forward with the barrel in place.

Also try to avoid moving the action forward when the barrel is not installed and the mag tube cap is off. You may find yourself feeling a little sheepish when the bolt assembly falls out of it's notches on the action bars and clatters across the floor.

Not that anything like that has EVER happened to me.
