wasnt sure if i should post this here or rimfire section. ive had many many 10-22 rifles over the years and for the most part they work well. however i have a new old stock SR-22 that continually stovepipes the empties with the next round 3/4 chambered. out of 10 rounds 4-5 times. took it apart looking for burrs or something in the ejector chanel or broken ejector, nothing. all looks good . im lost

I found a good cleaning and some lubrication makes a big difference with mine. Maybe try an updated recoil spring.

Grizz

actually tried much hotter ammo with no diff. the thing is clean and spotless inside. yes ive thought about a different spring but havent got one yet i should leave it locked back when its sitting see if that helps maybe

There was an experiment done with springs in pistol magazines to see what would happen if the magazine were filled and locked away for a year.

The fellow doing the experiment lost his job and the pistol mags were locked away for close to twenty years, before someone came across them and the note book inside.

All of the mags functioned flawlessly.

About the only thing that will take tension out of that spring will be to shorten it by cutting off a few rings or applying heat.

If the hotter ammo isn't working, it's not the spring. If it's as clean as you say, likely the extractor has an issue. Maybe the edge has lost its sharpness and won't grip the rim properly? Not likely either, because it's extracting the case and blowing the bolt far enough back to feed another cartridge.

I would say you likely have an ejector issue or maybe this from rimfire central

yea i agree its most likely not the ejector

what i do to all my 10/22s is radius and polish the bolt, polish the guide rod, smooth out the inside of the action, polish the face of the hammer.

when my friend brought his 10/22 ove that was completely stock i found it was WAY harder to #### the bolt with the factory parts, so if its hard to do by hand then its harder for the gun to cycle when firing ammo which will lead to jams.

now i have hardly any jams

you could also upgrade the extractor but i would do that last.

read up in the "tips and tricks" section

My SR 22 started doing the same thing. Tried different recoil spring and the issue ended up being the extractor. Put in a new one and started working fine again.

Clean it & LUBE it again.

Check a piece of fired brass to see if there are extractor marks that may lead to a burr that needs dressed.

Load one round in the mag at a time to see if the slide locks back.

If all else fails.....STOP LIMP WRISTING THE PISTOL & your cycling issues will disappear.

I had a lady bring in a Hi Standard pistol to tune some of her mags.
That gun had no extractor, run 100% A 106 or 107 series Supermatic Citation.
She bought it that way years ago, the original owner took it out as he figured it speeded up the cycle .
So you don't need one to run, but Ruger is not a Hi Standard

If all else fails....sorry messed this up Good solid grip. That is a good point, Have run into that as well.

yes well first off its not a pistol, it is a SR22 ( 10-22) rifle.maybe i am limp shouldering it. i have also replaced the extractor with a KIDD and it made no diff

IMHO, the poster from rimfire central has your solution.

I've used his fix on a couple of 10/22 rifles and it works. Takes a bit of fiddling but those parts causing the drag are not well finished and some polishing works wonders.

I'm wondering if it might be something with the chamber that causes the round to stick a bit.
Do the cases show any marks, or signs of bulging?

My old 10/22 started to do the same thing last year and still don’t know what it is!!

Usually an extractor issue. Not holding case well enough. Check chamber for roughness or buildup, could be making the extractor work too hard and loose grip.

My 10/22 is built with a Butler Creek stainless fluted target barrel and works flawlessly with about a half dozen 10 round ruger magazines.
Also have 3 ruger magazines with the red colour follower that cause it to stovepipe like the OP posted.
I’ve cured or at least improved function by giving the magazine a good shot of lube.
Might not be the same issue but worth a try.

Use a 243 or larger brass brush on the chamber section on a cordless drill with your favourite bore cleaner. Let it spin for 5 minutes or so applying your cleaner several times. Mop out the gunk after that ---- you can also throw away the brush as it's pooched. A clean chamber will make that extractor work perfectly. This is what's meant by suggestions to clean it again.
And run it WET..............
