Earliest bear ever. May 3rd

A 2 year old is 24 inches tall and a 4 year old is up to 40 inches tall. This one stood 8 inches shy of a 4'X8' sheet at my back door.
And it is illegal to shoot a 2 year old in BC.
But thanks for your stupid contribution to my posy hoyt.

I’m genuinely curious how black bear hunting is regulated in BC. I’ve only ever hunted bear in Ontario. If it is illegal to shoot a 2 year old bear in BC, how do you go about aging the bear before shooting it? Is it strictly based on height?

Never saw anything in Regs other than to not shoot a sow with cubs present.

Other than that, as long as you are happy...

Mebbe they carry ID? Dunno!

45lbs of just meat no bones.
From hoyt's 2 year old.
A 5+ year old gets 60 to 80 lbs of meat in the fall. But what do I know I have only shot 6 of them around here.

That can’t be right tigrr, my 3 last bears I got 100+ lbs on each almost 150lbs off my big colour phase.. I can’t imagine that half my bears were 5+++ years old.. but I’m a beginner so I could certainly be wrong. I would have guessed that a 3-4 year old bear would push 80lbs itself easily, or maybe it’s just the fat ass bears I’m shooting.. I feel like they just feed on cattle

Honestly I just believe it’s because shooting a sow with Cubs, or a cub isn’t legal and a lot of bears will stay with the mom for two years, meaning most any bear that’s solo is like 2+.

That’s just my understanding after listening to all the locals talk, originally from the east and moved west.

This is not correct, sows drive off their 1.5 year old cubs when they come into heat and are looking to be bred... they sometimes reconnect with the cubs after being bred, but rarely den with them for another winter as they will give birth to the new cub(s) in the den in late January/February. In Ontario, it is illegal to shoot a sow with cubs, regardless of the age of the cubs. Many sows are shot accidentally during the breeding season when they separate from the cubs. The most active bears in the bush are the 2.5 year old bears that are trying to establish their own range (territory), as they are continually being driven off by larger bears. One radio collared 2.5 year old male was tracked 300 kilometers from where it was born... so these young mobile bears are more exposed and vulnerable to hunting techniques.

And get shot by hunters. :)

Well this is my last hunting or fishing story on here. The stage is all yours Hoyt.

You are unreasonably touchy for a guy that has not even been criticized, certainly not by me. I have shot at least twenty 2 year old bears, specifically for BBQ meat... many years that is what I target. I have taken close to 70 bears in total, mostly with archery gear... several over 500 pounds and a dozen over 400 pounds, I outfitted for bears off and on for 20 years and have hauled and/or tracked 250+ bears... and I am going back to full time bear guiding next spring. I say that to say, I see nothing wrong with your harvest... and I don't think anyone else has expressed any criticism on this thread either... so not sure what your beef is?

Average age of the bears I have taken up here has been 10 years old (a tooth is taken to be aged during the harvest report). Of those bears, not one has had a hide that squared greater than 5'6"

black bear to grow need good source and less hibernation of course we have long winter and not that much food ... add the grizzly in the equation. but there are some brutes here. few taken around dawson and other places that i wont say ...

Well, it's hardly a hunting story, tigrr. Critiquing is common in the hunting fraternity, just have to have big shoulders. I'm a trophy hunter, and have absolutely no problem guys killing any size of game, if they're happy, I'm happy. BTW, congrats on the bear, you protected your family and in return, table fare.
