Hk SL8

i want one for my collection so bad! Not paying ####### or ee prices tho.
I guess you won’t be adding one to the collection then,lol....they ain’t gonna get any cheaper.
The NR tax has already gone up $5-600 bucks over two years ago prices, and the very few Canadian retailers that even advertise them are all “out of stock”.
My guess is that when or even IF they land in the country again they will be retailing for $3k-ish ballpark, the gun dealer racks are currently cleaned out @$2400 price point.

I'm going to say it has more to do with Canadian distributor than HK not sending product when an order is placed and paid for.

I am intrigued by this - I had my heart set on an X95 and am waiting patiently for one to be available but in the meantime I have read up on this. One of the "features" that really appeals to me is the infrequency of cleaning - think H&K said every 15,000 rounds. I also heard it is more accurate than the X95. I don't know if the SL8 is actually a 5.56 that is stamped as a .223 for export regulatory compliance, but it is also $600 or so less (at least currently listed on some vendor websites) than the X95. Would be curious to hear some real experience CGN owners comparing and contrasting the two. Sure, it would be nice to get both (if they are ever available)...if you could pick one between these two which one would you pick? Low on my priority list is modifications, so it doesn't matter to me about third party upgrades, etc. I use most of my guns stock anyways and add an optic, grip, etc.

Alright I have a limited amount of time on the X95, more time for the SL8, but disclaimer I haven't done any extensive testing on both as far as ammo preference, just basic bulk 55gr federal, 62gr m855 federal, and some 69gr swiss p target(very limited number of rounds).

So I'm breaking it down on the two paragraphs

SL8:
Pros: Accurate, this is probably the most accurate out of the box autoloader i own(with appropriate ammo), with swiss p target you can comfortably do 0.5 moa 5 shot groups at 100. with the bulk stuff it's much less impressive around 1.5-2 moa. The gun is also phenomenally clean in the action, due to its design and sure you can go 15k without cleaning but why push it that far? The trigger is quite good for a factory gun. The weight of the gun makes it a fairly soft shooting gun. The gun is truly ambi friendly.
Cons: Weight and balance, this is a nose heavy gun thanks to its nose heavy barrel, and a generally heavy gun. The bore offset is huge with magnified optics, less so with a low mount unmagnified optic. If you don't convert the magwell to ar mags the factory mags are typical Hk, very expensive. The barrel not being threaded is a big fail for me.

Meh: Some people hate it, I don't mind it but the thumbhole stock. It can be a turn off for people.

X95:
Pros: The compact form and the excellent balance, this is not a particularly light gun but a lot of the heavy bits sitting behind your pistol grip makes for one well balanced gun. This gun has a lower bore offset than the SL8. It has a threaded barrel in a common ar threading, and stock has ar based controls, and takes ar mags.

Cons: Trigger is mediocore at best, accuracy is acceptable for a fighting carbine but it's nowhere near a SL8 especially with match ammo this is a 2 moa gun on average 1.5 on its good day with expensive ammo.

Meh: Some people hate the bullpup ergos, some love it, I can't tell you what you like, I am predominantly AR/C7/C8 with my shooting till OIC, so to me it's awkward, but I'm sure with adequate training it could be fine.

TL:DR The SL8 should be your choice if you want to usually take this to the range and shoot for accuracy, for action shooting such as 3 gun competition x95would be the handier option of the two.

Edit: Little education time on anyone purchasing any european manufactured firearm, due to legal gubbins they have to mark it 223 Rem instead of 5.56x45 when selling to civilians . But by european standards they measure it by CIP standards rather than the SAAMI standards, and by CIP standards 223 Rem and 5.56X45 is the same thing, so this is not just the Hk but any european manufactured gun that says 223 Rem should be able to safely chamber 5.56

Hope this helps.

This is very helpful, thanks. Since I originally posted, I picked up an X95 and everything you describe is dead-on. I love the ergonomics and the weight. I have added a Magpul offset light mount (11 o clock) for my Streamlight flashlight and have a Sig Romeo 5 on it, though I recently ordered a mount to put it higher. Accuracy was OK (I found my WK to be slightly better, but this could be for a number of reasons - I need some more range time with it). I am not used to the bullpups at all, and while the mag release button is in a good spot, it will take some time to get use to putting the mag in the back).

I have multiple alerts for an SL8 at a number of vendors. Seems like there is a significant price variation (at least in my view) amongst vendors (I have seen a swing of $500 going either way depending on vendor). I hope to be able to get an SL8 once it is available. The infrequent cleaning "feature" is an attractive one for lazy types like me. I am happy to clean it ever 2000 rounds, much less 15000. I will definitely get the magwell adapter...I saw some of the prices for the HK mags and had to do a double take and wonder if a foreign currency was being quoted...

Ah, I understand. Thanks for clarifying. I thought that the company had some sort of weird political agenda or something...

More a meme than anything. I haven't had much of an issue with their cs at least with getting swag, I haven't had to use their product warranty in the last almost decade of owning their products so can't vouch for that end.

They don't have the social media standing that some of the other marques that have big name instagram influencers and what not to rep their gear, generally focusing more on professional end users.

Mixed with them not selling a lot of their more sought after military models such as the G36 or MP7 to civilians has also given them that reputation.

End of the day Hk products are among the best of their class, but they are rarely cheap and not a lot of customizing options exist, and some components such as magazines will hurt your wallet and feelings.

Everyone loves to complain HK won't sell their G36 / MP7 whatever to anyone.....and have no idea the pressure and legal regulations in Germany that prevent such sales.
They have an anti Police and Military defense minister who is determined to punish the German Firearms industry. Lot's of Political games in that country and I feel for German Firearms Manufacturers it's a wonder they stay in business......check out Sig Sauer Germany...sadly no-more.

Isn't Sig owned by the same parent company as Mauser? Didn't Mauser move to another facility in Germany?

The Mauser name has been sold several times, the current owner is Sauer. There's nothing Mauser on the current "Mauser" M18 rifles other than the name... they're not even made in Oberndorf.

Mauser basically does not exist after the war, even the original factory is gone. What's left is a little Muser museum in Oberndorf that's hidden away from plain view, as the people don't want to be reminded of their past. I can tell you this because I've been there.

Thanks for the colour and for the background. Interesting. So tying in to the original topic, does the closing of Sig Sauer facility really spell the death knell of their ability to produce any more Sig Products? Or has this been transitioned to another company or subcontracted? I would think if our retailers knew that Sig were no longer making SL8s, that they would remove them all from their online listed catalogs. So far, all retailers I have seen have them listed as out of stock / backordered, etc.

Sig has nothing to do with the SL8... it's a H&K product.

It is an absolutely wonderful museum too, at 2 euros totally worth the visit. I 100% recommend a visit to oberndorf to folks it's a gorgeous little town. and that museum has some absolute gems in it including the german space magic gun.

I feel like I should clarify my "HK hates us" is a common joke on the internet when it comes to how slow it takes them to fill orders. They're honestly a great company and its worth waiting for an SL8, they're extremely underrated rifles .
