Slugging it out

If I want to purchase slug rounds for a 12 gauge cylinder bore in 2/34-3", what marks or brands would you recommend?

My vote would be for Brenneke. Certainly the Brenneke out performs any foster style slug, but some of the newer designs from Barnes, Dixie and a couple of others look pretty good. Still, Brenneke is a strong performer, and has a good reputation for use on the big game of every continent.

Zombies. Plus some incredibly threatening squash that are terrorizing my neighbourhood.

I'm thinking of a target load at first and then something effective against large animals, if necessary.

I don't know, I use Challengers for effn' around. The price is right for me, it's Canadian and accurate enough for targets and then some.

In the field, my vote would be for Brenneke.

just on a side note here, I read that Brenneke slugs dont have any spiral at all, if this is the case, why do they have the spiral grooves( other than to reduce friction)?

The "rifling" veins found on rifled slugs is simply a mechanism to help allow the slug to pass through a full choke without causing damage to the gun. Any spin induced by these veins is not likely to aid accuracy. The slug flies more or less straight due to it's nose heavy construction.

I have been using Federal LE127RS in my 14" Fabarm and in my 18.5 870 when I had it. Good slugs, great accuracy and that expensive to boot.

...and by reducing the bearing surface you reduce friction and increase velocity.

Also, the wad on a brenneke serves as a gas seal because it's attached to the base of the slug and stays attached when fired. The wad, being attached, serves as a stabilizer to the slug attaining better velocity and accuracy.

If you have a particular brand you use for blasting at the range and another brand you use for "BEAR COUNTRY" , make sure you run quite a few of the "BEAR COUNTRY" rounds through you shotgun to make sure they feed and function as they should. Some rounds don't work in all guns.

if you are just messing around shooting at squash youre going to find brennees an expensive proposition.

buy a few boxes of brennekes, use up one box to note how they function in your shotgun and differ in POI from regular cheap-o™ slugs, and keep the rest for use on game.

if you want 2 3/4" slugs to plink around with buy a box of the Winchester SuperX slugs, they are cheap and effective and reasonably accurate foster slugs with manageable recoil. walmart has big econo-boxes of them pretty cheap, and theyre even on sale quite often.
