6mm CM

That would be because you’re wrong, they don’t shoot identical bullets

If the 243 has slightly more case capacity, why does the 6mmCM have a good 10+% energy starting out?

Thats for the total non-answer. If anything, that shows why the 243 should be at least equal to the 6CM with regards to initial energy because the 243s larger case capacity should result in higher velocities.

243 factory ammo is pretty mild. Lots of old rifles out there chambered in it, including semi auto, lever action and pump action

Ahhh yes, of course. Pick the best 6mm CM ammo you can find, and compare it with mediocre 243win ammo.

I love how Hornady makes loads for both cartridges using the 87gr Vmax, but they only used the 6mmCM for the comparison in that chart. And why you might ask? Probably because the 243win load is faster!

The 95gr SST Superformance ammo for 243win also starts with more energy than the 103 and 108gr 6mmCM loads too. Obviously it doesn't keep up at range, but its still 802ft/lbs @ 500yds, vs 1106 ft/lbs @ 500yds, which is less than 40% difference. Thats a far cry from the "Twice as much energy for the CM @500" claimed by others in this thread.

87 vmax 243 factory load = 3240 fps, in 6mm Creed it's rated @ 3210 fps. I've pushed the 87 Vmax to 3300 fps with RL16 in my 24" 6cm

My 6mm Creed, I've been shooting it lately with the 103gr ELDx @ 3150 fps with RL22. I've also been shooting a 25-06 with some vanilla 100gr Speer SP @ 3400 fps, fast load with RL26. The 25-06 doesn't compare downrange, shooting 10" steel plate at 600 yards, you can be pretty sloppy with the wind call with the 6mm and make hits. Not so much with the 25-06. 6mm recoils and jumps a lot less too, although the rifle is about 2lbs heavier which helps

500y energy :
243 95gr SP @ 2950 fps (ballpark velocity of what a 22" 243 will often shoot with factory ammo) : 690 ft lbs
6cm 103gr ELDx @ 3150 fps : 1244 ft lbs
25-06 100gr SP @ 3400 fps : 1092 ft lbs

Wind deflection per MPH crosswind @ 500y

243 95 SP 2950 = 2.5"
6cm 103 3150 = 1.4"
25-06 100 SP 3400 = 1.9"

.243 Win dummy loaded with a 103gr Eld-X. Base of the bullet is right at the shoulder. Should work fine out of a short action Rem 700.

I've pushed 55gr bullets in the 243 (24") to 4000fps with Varget, it's a fun load, very accurate too. Muzzle blast is excessive and you could set the grass on fire with the fireball shooting prone, but man does it turn ground hogs inside out instantly...worth it lol.

I shot a four point mule deer once with a 55gr Nosler BT from a 243. Was only going 3850 fps though. Bullet even exited broadside :)

Shot a pronghorn with that 55 gr load started at 4K. Shot him face on and the bullet exited just in front of his hip. He folded like a cheap shirt.

Guys who want to hunt with the heaviest for caliber target bullets out of fast twist barrels are also hunting big game with varmint bullets. Pros.

Lol.

Not really that funny.

I have a Model 7 Rem in 243 Win with a Mac Edge stock on it - Nice little rifle BUT does not shoot great so the barrel is getting replaced with a New IBI spiral fluted 1-8 twist 22 " long and chambered in 6 CM ! I'm hoping it will LOVE the 90 gr Accubonds and the 95 LRX Barnes bullets - we shall see . My opinion is the 6 CM is a MUCH better designed cartridge then the 243 win . RJ

.

You always preach high velocity for hunting Bucky! - Sufficient penetration with the 55NBT isn't a concern

I'd class deer and antelope as medium game myself

Be a LOT more KOOLER if it was a 243AI - 5 grs more powder - sharp shoulder angle to GET rid of the 243 Wins dreaded case stretch ! jmo RJ

Except the AI absolutely folds some fellers...like a cheap shirt?
Confounding, that fire forming, is...
The 243AI really is the dirtiest 6mm move available.
Truth.

The only reasons I could see to 6 creed is if you were using aics pattern mags and wanted to run a binder plate or if you like the very accurate high bc factory offerings available for it. If im building a 6mm rifle for myself the only 2 cartridges Im into are the 243win or the 6br. A 6 rem is pretty fun as well. If the gun can run a sammi 243 then i will take the extra velocity afforded by the AI case. Deer hunter just build a 6mmbr already and end the madness.... Hint ;)
