anyone have this done? I have bad astigmatism. This was the recommendation. Apparently, I could get regular Lasik, but the odds are that I might need to go in later in life, but I only have so much tissue. (so not the recommendation) .
According to Lasik centre and what i have read, the Zyoptix procedure takes a little more assessement and actually a pre-planned shaping of the tissue. 5 year free fixing if it needs to be touched up and free post-op sessions. I explained that I am involved in sport shooting. The guy advised eye protection, (duh). What I have read on the Brian Enos and IPSC forums is not to be around comped rifles or maybe comped pistols for a few months, as the flap may pull back?
It is not cheap, especially for my level of astigmatism.
Bonus is I get to buy new sunglasses and shooting glasses:cool:

ask ipsc1
He and I did PRK at the same place, pretty close to the same time, not Lasik.

PRK Involves removal of the epithelium. This exposes the inner cornea which the computer assisted laser will begin to resculpt the curvature of the eye. Lasik requires the surgeon to create a corneal flap. A portion of the flap remains attached to the eye (as a hinge) while the remainder is gently lifted up and back exposing the inner cornea. The cool beam laser then resculpts the cornea and the flap is returned to its original position. (Yeah, this is a cut / paste...)

IPSC1 went back for a touch up. I was good to shoot 2 weeks later. I didn't need as much correction, though. 7 Years later, still the best money I have ever spent.

I guess the Zyoptix laser has only been around for approx 5 years. According to what I am reading, it utilizes small and large lasers (not attached to Sharks heads-LOL) It is basically "tailored" to each eye. A "multi-dimensional" eye-tracker, and treatment Calculator software. Sounds really cool. It lowers the chance of Halo effect and decreased night vision.

Got Lazik surgery some 9 years ago. Everything went well. Seen shadows and halos when it's was dark for a few month (still see them when i'm night driving). Definitely worth it! I was 25, even if i only reach 40 without glasses, that mean about 5 pairs of glasses at about 300$ each... Of course you don't do extreme sports for the first month, but i never heard of anybody who had problem with the "flap".

Does this not hurt like b@#$% in the recovery phase? (first days/week?)

I was sitting in the lobby as people were coming out (of the surgery rooms), they were wearing sunglasses. I noticed (when they applied eye drops) their eyes were a little red and watery, but they seemed in good spirits. There may be some discomfort, but a read thru a big thick book of satisfied customers, + the 10+ people in the lobby had no complaints..(I asked):p

DO NOT DO LASIK if you want to keep shooting. any surgeon that recommends Lasik for a shooter is a moron. Get PRK. I had super bad astigmatism in my left eye (legally blind actually) and had both my eyes done in 98, best money I've ever spent (cept for that Tanfoglio Sean, er I mean TanFANGlio as the guys at DVC Ventures call it).

I had Lasik done 8 years ago. Now 20/20 in one eye, slightly better in the other. Yes, a slight loss of night vision, and perhaps slightly more sensitivity to bright sunlight. BUT...absolutely the best decision I ever made! I don't regret it in the slightest. I regret that I declined the pre-surgery painkiller they offered me, as I had a lot of pain for the first 24 hours, but I still wake up some days thinking how wonderful it is to see well.

I always have to laugh at the people who go into this procedure wearing pop-bottle glasses, blind as bats (i.e. like me), then come out seeing well for the first time in their lives (like me), and who then immediately begin to piss and moan about halos and starbursts and poor night vision. Jeez!! I'm thankful every day.

I'm not saying isn't a fine surgery, but they tell you in the their own literature that the incision site could reopen if you participate in impact sports, shooting is considered an impact sport. not necessarily because of the gun you are shooting, but those around that can subject you to massive muzzle blasts.why even risk it when PRK or RPRK is an option?

Literature can be bias though. (on both sides of RPK and Zyoptix) They did say that some police and military choose to get the RPK, but with the new procedure, they do less and less of the PRK. I am looking into this more.
i think that if I was heading back standing next to a big tank gun within a few months of surgery I would be concerned, but if it heals completely (2-6months to account for the 5 layers), than I don't think I would contemplate RPK.

well a good friend of mine just had his done this summer and the doctor does all the various types and is one of the pioneers in Canada for laser eye surgery. I went with 999 to his first appointment (he did mine in 1998), and he still recommends PRK for shooters. he had a hockey player have a flap come loose years after the surgery, after taking what people thought was a minor hit. No way I'd risk that.

Wel, i was knocked out for the next 24 hrs, i just slept! The most inconforting aspect was the smell of burnt flesh while the laser is doing his job - especially when you KNOW it come from your eyes...

yeah take the painkiller and sleep for the first 24hours, and all will be good. don't take the painkiller and suffer!

Had PRK done this spring. Best money I ever spent. The Clinic I went to (Coal Harbour Eye Center in Vancouver) does both PRK and Lasik. The reason which they wanted to do PRK on me was because they like to leave a minimum thickness in the cornea for eye stability. PRK is done near the outside of the cornea, and if they ever have to retouch it, there will be a substantial amount under the old surgery, so it won't mess with the integrity of the eye. Lasik involves removing the flap (which gets replaced), and this puts the lazered area much deeper in the cornea. In my case they would not have had enough left for a second procedure, should the case arise. PRK has a longer more comfortable recovery than lazik. Suck it up! It's not that bad!

I was nearsighted with astigmatizm in one eye, and my vision sucked. Now I have 15/20 in both eyes (yes, better than 20/20)! It took about two months until my vision became ultimately fixed, but after about 10 days it was much better than it was before the surgery. No more halos at night, no problems at all actually, it's a friggin' dream come true!

And in regards to the pain after surgery, they gave me freezing eye drops to get rid of the "sand in the eyes" feeling, and a pair of no perscription contacts to keep your eyelids running smoother over the lazered part of your eye.

I was a little dissapointed that "Lazer eye surgery" does not actually allow you to shoot lazers out of your eyes at stuff........but I guss you can't have it all!!:D

I went to LASIK in Toronto for a consultation and scheduled a procedure. Afterwards, I felt slightly uncomfortable.
The next day I went to TLC and found out why.
DO NOT GO TO LASIK!!!!
The Lasik centers use doctors in training and doctors who want to learn how to do the procedure call up a Lasik center.
The doctor Lasik had asigned to me was listed as having 4000 ocular procedures to her credit. I called Lasik to confirm that they were actually LASIK procedures...they couldn't! I asked how many she had done..They couldn't! I asked what ocular procedures meant....they couldn't tell me...
I Cancelled my procedure on the spot.

TLC also sells their old equipment to LASIK. That is why the never say they have the latest tech.
TLC does. When LAsik is cutting your eye open and saying they will reshape it at 50,000 points, TLC will do it better and safer and reshape 500,000 points.

Is this an ad for TLC. No, but they are your eyes. There is no going back.
Look at the list of doctors at each clinic.
only 3 guys do it at TLC....and 3 only. Not the doctor of the month.
TLC also states the doctors have done 40,000 or 30,000 Laser eye surgeries.
Not like Lasik who use a blanket Ocular procedure which could mean anything, including rinsing out someones eye if they have dirt in it and a basic eye exam. (that really makes me happy they are cutting open my eye)

TLC was Cleaner, friendlier and more professional.
I shudder sometimes thinking what might have happened if I did go and get butchered at Lasik.

Only 3 doctors at the LASIK centre I went to perform the procedures. When did this happen?
