Wild boars corner Italian woman at the supermarket and steal her groceries
A video posted to social media has reignited the debate around the presence of wild boars in Italian cities and towns after the video showed a herd of boar cornering a woman in a supermarket parking lot and stealing her groceries.
Posted to Facebook on Thursday, the video shows a family of boars, four adults and two young boars, aggressively pursuing a woman as she walks around a supermarket parking lot in the village of Le Rughe in the province of Roma, Italy.
The woman is seen trying in vain to shake off the boars, but the animals doggedly continue to follow. Visibly frustrated, the woman finally drops her shopping bags and watches as the boars tear into her groceries on the ground, the younger ones eating whatever they could find and the adults carrying their spoils elsewhere.
“I don’t believe my eyes,” the person who filmed the video can be heard saying in Italian.
Data published in 2011 states that 2,879 people live in the village of Le Rughe, located less than an hour’s drive from the city of Rome.
Boars, according to several local media outlets, are a common sight in Rome’s suburbs and can often be found rummaging through garbage bins in urban areas.
According to the Guardian, two million wild boars are estimated to roam Italy.
For some, hunting boars offers a popular pastime. For others, they’re a nuisance.
Italian farmers, in recent years, have especially protested wild boars destroying their land and causing deadly road accidents. The Guardian reported that wild boars are responsible for an average of 10,000 road accidents a year in Italy.
There have also been reports of people being injured or killed in attacks by boars, and an increase in sighting of boars rummaging through rubbish in city areas.
Coldiretti, Italy’s largest farmer’s association, asked authorities to intervene in the increase in boar populations in some regions..
“We must act as soon as possible and involve the army if necessary,” Coldiretti said in a statement last month.
