Sierra's new 140gr Tipped Gameking is shooting well with RL16. 2800 fps avg

2800 fps with 140gr is motering right along. I found H414 pushed 140gr SST about 2750 just under max but accuracy wasn't the greatest. Mine seems to like H4831SC but it is in the high 2600's. Looks like I should be trying RL26!

I shot 47.5grs RL26 under the 140gr Sierra and it did 2835 fps, group was just under 1moa . I am able to load these out to 2.938" OAL which helps in getting a bit more powder under them without hitting high PSI

I am in the same boat! Although I am trying to resist the urge, and the duplication, as I already have a 6.5CM and a 6.5X55, 280AI, several 308s, 243, etc. There is no need for a 260, and seeing this thread certainly does not help!
That is a fine looking build though, just curious, do you run the factory bottom "metal" or do you upgrade to one of the after market aluminum options?
 
just the plastic trigger guard. I've owned the metal aftermarket ones, they're nicer but don't function any different
 
Looking at these #s is it safe that the 6.5 Creedmoor does nothing more then the 260 except there is lots of factory ammo and a great marketing campaign?
 
I really like the 6.5 Creedmoor. This Tikka 260 is pretty good, it's what the 260 should of been in 1997. 8 twist barrel, 2.95" magazine box for the long heavy bullets

The 6.5 Creedmoor isn't smoke and mirrors. It's the 260 done right for today's bullet selection and it's well supported by every gun maker and lots of terrific ammo options for factory ammo shooters. It will come within 30 fps of the 260 Rem when loaded apples to apples

Can you honestly say in a hunting rifle using any traditional cup and core bullets the Creedmoor has a real benefit? I could see using the heavier ELDM or the ABLR could benefit from the extra seating length though.
 
There is still lots of .260 ammo selection from Nosler, Federal and Hornady. More on the premium end than the cheap ammo though. One thing the .260 has over the 6.5 CM is the ability to acquire cheap brass to resize, ie. .243, 7-08, .308 etc.

The 6.5CM has brought more bullet selection to market for sure, but also has made it harder to source bullets for the .260 and 6.5x55 shooters.:)

Ammo, who can afford to buy loaded ammo anymore?! I look at all the 6.5's as hand loaders.

I'm considering turning down my varmit contour 260Rem to something a little more carry friendly

Stretched out the 260 this morning to 565 yards. Nice group with the 140gr Sierra Tipped Gameking over RL16 (2767 fps).

Original mag only goes to 2.81"ish, so I ditched it for the M+ magazines that come in the dreaded 6.5 Creedmoor rifles.

30-06 length mag would work (3.34") but I'd have to replace the bolt stop with the long action version. The 2.95" M+ is plenty long for the 260

Funny the 6.5CM mags would allow for a longer OAL than the 260 mags.

That would be a great set up for the 243.
 
Lapua has announced a suspension of brass production for a number of their offerings, including the 260. I managed to find a couple hundred Alpha LRP , so the 260 will be able to keep going for a good while yet.

I've been packing the Tikka 260 for deer, loaded with the Berger 135gr Classic Hunter over enough N555 to make 2800 fps. Shoots quite well, hopefully I can get the opportunity to see how they do on impact. It's been impossible to get more 140gr Sierra TGK so I've been forced to try some other stuff lately
