is the 3006 dead?

I have always loved the 30 caliber. If I couldn't have a 308 I'd buy a 3006. My dad has a Win mod 70 in 3006. It's very accurate and easy to shoot and I'd feel confident hunting any north American game with it aside from grizzly bears but it might be good for that too. I likely won't ever have a chance to shoot a grizzly and I'm okay with that.
 
i got to shoot the 3006 this afternoon , just to see where the 180gr load shot incomparrison to the 130gr load......
well, its almost apples and oranges with that Rifle now, i mean, with the 180 load, mild, it seems like a slow thump ?
but with the 130gr load, it is alot more lively and feels just like a 270, or to use just as that application ...

kind of rejuvinates the 30-06 in my experiences now, I was all bent up on using 180gr loads but im really not sure its the sweet spot for it anymore, on the big Game you guys have, yep sure, but as a deer or elk gun, 150gr seems the Vanilla sweet spot though.

and a fwiw- 130gr ppsn 3000 fps +2 inch say 100m
180gr ppsn 2450 fps - 6 inch from POA with above Zeroed.
 
^^^ Those speeds seem slow, especially the 180 gr load, like 300 fps slow. Little wonder the recoil's mild.

I would try using 165 grs, and if you can find Winchester Staball powder down there, grab some. Hodgdon has some very promising data on their website, and I'll be trying out some new loads later this week.

yeah there is no doubt they are not beyond book loads 9.3, horses for courses a bit down here especially with me.

they r all with varget an i think the 180 load is min or a gr lower possibly for some reason unknown.. theres like 20 loaded left il take some deer over winter with and proberly be done with the 180gr versions-

the 165gr ppsn seems like the Sweetest spot, i bulked up on 150gr PPSN then stumbled onto heaps more 130gr on sale online privately, :)


are you chasen max speed with the new powder for the particular rifle?

Yeah, I'm trying to see how much speed I can wring out of it. If the Hodgdon figures hold true, it looks like I can bump up a notch in bullet weight while keeping the velocity of the lighter bullet.

I have a really nice 7x57 & a 9.3x62 in the safe I really should use more often, but right now I'm kind of wondering why I bother with anything other than the .30/06. I need to fall in love with the 7mm again before I do something stupid, like sell it.

Yeah thats a real fascinating discussion ive been having with myself too........ its a bit Lucky for the Ruger 35 whelen too man.... if it were anything else.. Gone.
an the Kimber.... well, it could be any calibre an it would be love, an the 308 barrel kind of would put the 30-06 back out of action, Except for the Left hand action...... FFS.

if,........ i could sell the kimber to replace it with a ultra light LH. i would. in 30-06. orrr 308 an sell the other bloody 3 lol
 
They always have rounds and rifles where I am as well as at online stores.

I believe they are overpowered for deer, just right for average black bears, decent for big black bears if a heavy load is used.

I have 2 of them but I’d prefer something smaller for deer like a 260, and something bigger for large bears like a 35 or a 9.3mm. I think that makes it a perfect medium which is hard to argue with for any hunter who mostly hunts deer but occasionally hopes for an opportunity at bigger game. Since most of us start out with the idea of becoming a “on rifle hunter” before we end up finding ourselves with a stack of different hunting rifles for different game at different distances, I think it’s likely many others will continue to repeat this process by starting out with a 30-06.

^^ This. My first rifle was a Remington 700 in 30:06, bought in 1978. I still have it and took a black bear this spring with it. One through the boiler room, 165 gr Ballistic Tip, bear went 25 yards and expired. 25 yards closer to the truck too :)
 
Besides polar bear, what in Canada would you not hunt with the 30-06? Where can you not find the ammo? How many cartridges can you load such a wide variety of bullets for?

The cartridge is pure utility. If you want to get into hunting all kinds of big game and only want one rifle. 30-06 is a good choice IMHO

Also it’s punched more nazis than ANTIFA ever will.

yeah thats a fair Question... At what point does the 30-06 become a Not Quite right cartridge for What game? an how does this come about? how could that be altered to be more suitable?
distance?oomph? what limits it for said Animal?
 
When my Dad passed away, I inherited his pride and joy. A Husqvarna model 4000 light weight in 30-06 with VERY nice wood. It worked well for Dad for quite a few years in the B.C. central interior, to fill the deep freeze with Moose and Mule Deer. I've used it and one of the last hunts was to Alberta, hunting Mule Deer on draw with my Daughter and Son In Law. The only other right handed shooter in the family is my eldest Granddaughter, so, when the time comes, it'll be handed down to her. In the meantime, I'll take it out for a few more hunts.

Just as an aside, and know that my hate for the 30-06 is pure... no other cartridge, save maybe the 7.62x39 has offed more two and four legged critters than the 303 Brit. Especially when it comes to Polar Bears and Nazis.

The 30-06 is just like a big name, well advertised Scotch.
It's exactly what you drink, because so and so does, and you really don't know any better.

anything can be BESTED just THINK how much better those 225 gr-ers i launched out of my 300 PRC today at 2850 fps would do over a 7 mag or a 300 win mag with those 160-165 gr-ers ? HA ! Just Sayin ! RJ
