Hello all i need some help form someone with experience with these.

I am looking to replace the scope on my m70 '06. I've got 3-9 x 40 bausch/Lomb on it now. it is a lightweight hunting rifle so not a tricked out LR machine. I am looking into the Mark 4 mr/t 2.5-8 x 36 for the following reasons.

i want glass a bit brighter i'll get that from Lepold vs BL (b/L is pretty good just not good enough for what i want)

would like to range find with the mil dot reticle

I would like the rifle to be sort of dual purpose hunting and accurately reach out and touch something if i have to...you know what i mean.. wink wink

2.5 with illum reticle good for close cover

8 with mildot good for out there.

so here's the point. THe m1 knobs are tall and i prefer to keep the profile low.

the m2 knobs are lower and it has the BDC for .308 168 gr. Can i manually set the bdc for my 06 with 22" tube and what ever load i am using. or will i have a bdc that is no good to me? then i gotta use the m1 knobs and submit to memory my ballistic table.

i apologize for the long msg just wanted to give some background info to help readers interpret my problem and avoid all the posts about why don't you do this and that instead of answering my question

I like my Mark4 3-9 36 M2 for service rifle matches. The 1MOA elevation adjustments may be crude but are fool proof. Leupold can make a custom BDC for you.
 
I'm a Mark4 M1 nut (self confessed) and yes, the will likely hang up in CQB situations (deploying out of a veh), I still like the ability to dial in the precision. If the M2 or M3 knobs work for you, then by all means get them and make your game productive.

My Service Rifle rig uses a MR/T Mark4 M1 3x9x36mm duplex (faster CQB acquisition) and my longer range rig sports a LR/T Mark M1 6.5 x 20 x 50mm mildot. I hear where you are coming from.

Hey, at least you are working with good glass and proven technology....
 
So can i adjust the BDC myself or is it set in stone?


Just for clarity... The Leupold BDC is visual rather than mechanical. You can adjust the scope's elevation to any position in 1 MOA increments. If you wanted to adjust the BDC, you could use a paint pen or engraver to make your own markings on the standard turret. The other solution is to have Leupold or another vendor create a turret marked for your specific load's trajectory.

I have an M2/M3 BDC - The numbers representing the Bullet drop sometimes are bang on and sometimes can be off. You really should verify them in any case. Esp if you plan on shooting at animals past 300m. Just to give you an idea of how it works, I will go through the steps that I did:

1.) Mount Scope/Bore sight. I don't slip the scales on the BDC usually as it will still change anyways.

2.) Take the appropriate ammunition (i.e. 308 Win 168 Grain - as seen on your knob) and zero the rifle at 100 yards. Once the reticle is centered on the group. I will slip the Windage knob and Elevation knob to 0 on the hash marks which should correspond to 1 on the BDC.

3.) I will then change the knob to the 200 yard setting and fire 3 shots at a target at 200 yards. I will verify that the center of the group is on or I will adjust the elevation as necessary (i.e. add 1" at 200 Yards) Write this down.

4.) I will repeat step 3 at 4,5,6 yds.

5.) Write down the amended knob readings for the ranges on Computer program and print out and tape to the stock.

Some will say that this defeats the purpose of a BDC but really it doesn't. I will compare my real world data to the BDC and make an adjustment call based on the application. For instance, if you are shooting a deer sized animal at 200 yds - your target area is approximately 12". Do you need to be bang on at 200 yds? Not likely - so I will just spin the BDC to 2 which is easier than looking at the card and adjusting to 2+1click (or 2-1 click) depending on your real world data. However if you are shooting at 400m you will need to know the dead on data as it can mean a difference of 4" which may not seem like a lot but can make the difference between a hit or miss on even a deer sized object in the field. As well, when shooting longer ranges you will have more time to take a shot (usually) at an animal as they are less likely to bolt. I shot a deer this year at 197m (lased) and I was able to take my time and dial in the correction and set up my rifle bipod. I dropped the doe with 1 shot.
