Most overrated rifle

Take a Winchester 1894 raise it above your head and give it a shake... Rattle rattle. Now do the same with any of Marlin's Lever action offerings... Winter crickets... That says it all right there. And I've got a couple of Winchester's

My preference for use in the field is the Marlin and have three in the safe. A model 94 in 44-40, a 444S in 444 Marlin and a GBL in 45-70. But, that being said, my favorite lever gun/calibre combo is the Winchester model 71 deluxe in 348 WCF.

Gevarm takedown .22lr seem overrated to me after buying one a few years back when some "new" old stock guns were being sold.... could not get it to run well despite them having a reputation of running well.

It seems like many of the people on this thread who have experienced an "over rated" sensation with a gun are more accurately describing the disappointment from buying a lemon.

The goofy manual bolt lock on the Ruger 10/22 and lack of last shot hold open is about the only negatives I can think of with the 10/22.... and perhaps the barrel band on the basic stock models. I bought a takedown stainless model for about $400 out the door when they were on sale at Cabella's a few years back and it has been reliable and accurate out of the box. I later added a magpul backpacker stock which transformed it into an even nicer package.

I must be in the minority or more likely never owned enough firearms,but I never have found a rifle to be that overrated that I have owned,but I have always wished they cost less.and the need work firearms I enjoyed the most,they allowed me to tinker and do the mess around and learn as I went along.but that would not hold true in the sixties while living in the sticks.

As for the question;
10-22, and anything made by Cooey. Really "WANT" to love Cooeys, and I can certainly admire the simple/reliable designs..Canadian factor, etc. Just never loved owning/shooting them.

Cooey's 39 was so popular back in '70's, when I was a kid, 'cause they were the cheapest thing going, bar none. And they were sold everywhere.

What kid couldn't scrape up 30 bucks for his first non-air rifle? But I saved a little more and got a Toz-17 Russian made repeater.

I found two on E.E., but 300 to 400 bucks was a tad too much to relive my youth.

Zastava m70....not terrible but way overpriced for what they are. Very rough around the edges. Scope base holes often drilled off-center. Short cartridge chamberings have very wobbly mag followers and it is difficult to line the rounds which causes misfeeds. Bedding the action is pretty much a must. It should not be a $700. $400 more like it.

In my experience it's the Ruger M77 as the most overrated and the the one I was most disappointed in. Traded it quickly in for an M700 that was way more accurate but still had chamber problems till it got reamed properly.

Admittedly, they are, as you put it, rough around the edges. With the roughness in cycling the action, they do gradually smooth out. That's the only real issue I experienced. Just for the hell of it, I opted for a full wood model in '.366 Wagner', aka 9.3x62. Using some components I acquired ahead of time, the degree of accuracy I experienced with initial test loads using the 285gr PRVI bullets and top end loads of IMR 4320 and IMR 4064 far exceeded my expectations with this 'inexpensive' rifle. So much so, I picked up another of the same in 7x57. Considering the cash outlay, they seem to function well and shoot like a hot damm. No complaints.

Zastava m70 is defs overrated on these boards, but I am a part of the problem not the solution on that one

Mosin was defs overrated with guys in my generation ~10 years ago. They were talked about like they were the most reliable firearm ever made when they were a relic by ww2

Everyone was building ####ty scout rifles with them. I joined in the fun late. Back then you probably could have bought a gun site scout or a m70 for the cost of my cheapy build.

We all yammered about the cost of ammo but I still have a bunch lying around I didn’t use. Could have split the difference and bought an axis or 4 and a bunch of 7.62x51 at the time
