barrel crack.. why?

any idea of what caused this? there is a crack running around the barrel just behind the locking block. Its a .40Cal Beretta.

Any ideas? If its something that I did, then I would like to know to prevent it from happening again.. if its just metal fatigue, then I guess it was just a matter of time.

How many rounds do you have through the gun? Did you buy it new or was it a police trade-in?

Beretta 96 is notorious for its lack of durability. It's just the nature of the beast.

Some Forces in Ontario used the 96D when they switched from the wheel guns. They used them for about 10 yrs and then started to faze them out for the Glock because of failures.
 
The Vancouver PD got rid of theirs too. Unfortunately the gun was designed before the cartridge, and then they tried to engineer it into the more powerful chambering. You should replace the barrel. I don't know if an aftermarket barrel would be any better at dealing with the issue than the factory one was - anyone tried an aftermarket solution? I think I know where there is one.

"If its something that I did" - that depends; what did you do? Hard to comment without knowing more info and seeing it in person (can you take a better pic?)

Either way this is NOT a common problem with Beretta, .40 or not! It's not uncommon for a locking bloke to brake after 20,000+
rounds, but the barrel crack? that's a first...

its from an ex-police .40 cal.
I bought it from another CGN member and may have put 2000 rounds through it.
The problem is, that I just sold it to a friend of mine ( waiting on the transfer).
So is it from my reloads? or is it a worn out gun?
we couldnt figure out why the slide would return to its nowmal position after firing... then I stripped it and found the crack.

A new barrel is on order already, but I have a 92Inox, and an M9 that I do not want this to happen to.
I would have expected a barrel failure to be a horizontal line going the length of the barrel.. not one going around its circumference.

Well all I can say say is that if it's one of the early ones at transition from the 38 a lot of rounds went through it (especially in Ontario). I still haven't turned mine in for a glock. I got mine in 1990 and I'm sure some have gone to the general Public with thousands of rounds of ammo down the spout and some failure should be expected or we wouldn't be sending the new boys and girls out with the Glock. I would definately look into a new barrel, as I always said, what the hell was the matter with the 9mm in the first place.
 
yeah I had one make it 160,000 rounds +, but another that had the frame fail at 21,000 or so.
never ever seen a break like that before. I would definitely ask over at Berettaforum.net . is it a factory barrel or an aftermarket?
 
Did you have a bore obstruction that you know of?

I know a lot of guns can physically survive a KB, most have to meet "barrel bursting" tests for US importation, so it may have gone through a KB and not have appeared to have any damage.

Just throwing ideas out there, but i've never seen any pistol barrel start to crack like that! (i would probably call it an isolated incedent)

I'm waiting to see the availablity of a new barrel, ( since saturday) and they said it would cost about $200. Then a guy Pm'd me about a Bar-sto barrel. Are Bar-sto any good? I heard some less than complimentary things about the ones for the glocks that make a 12(6) just restricted.
The bar-sto one is supposed to be somewhere around $100, where a factory replacement will be twice that much.

any advice as to which one to get?

Bar-sto is not just good, but excellent. 100 buckaroos for a new bar-sto sounds good.
 
Unless Bar-sto requires fitting (costs $) I'd go with it...assming it won't take longr than the factory barrel.

EDIT: where do you guys see bar-sto barrels for $100? they are listed for $200+ on their website...
