Hey Guys,
Contemplating something I didnt think I would....but its come up....haha. I've got a Rem LVSF in 7-08 sitting in a McMillan stock. It shoots decent, and is a nice carrying gun overall.....
I long for another Model 70 stainless.....I am strongly considering selling the LVSF and buying a 270 in a SS Model 70. I would dump the factory stock and put it in a McMillan most likely (with the way our dollar is its a shame not to).
The rifle is used as an all-around rifle. I hunt deer, elk, the occasional moose, bear, etc.....an Alberta rifle....
Right now I shoot 140 NP's out of the 7-08 and am happy with results.....

My wife shoots the same gun, and would be her primary as well. She handles recoil decently but I did choose the 7-08 for a reason....

Am I crazy to even think of sellin the 7-08 and buy a 270 Model 70? Dang I just hate this 'new gun' itch that comes along all the time....haha....

There will be an increase in recoil. If the wife is happy with the 7mm-08,you might be wise to keep the 7mm-08.After all,if she is happy, you are happy.

well there's an easy answer to this one...keep the little 7 for the wife and get the 270 for yourself..problem solved...you get to scratch the new rifle itch and she gets to keep the 7-08...it's a win/win..

Yea....2 good points....the wife likes the 7-08 so I'd probably have a hard time considering she shoots it well and I love shooting it...

Might just have to buy the M70 and have a nice set of 2.....heh.....

God I'd love to find an M70 stainless 30-06....

Just out of curiosity will you be shoooting a 140 gr bullet from the 270? If so what are you gaining besides the increase in recoil? I am the last guy to talk you out of buying a new gun, expecially if two new guns would work better than one, but I don't understand the overlap calibers.

come on guys the .270 is a pussycat to shoot its not like he's going to a 338 win mag or something.

Tell that to one of the guys in our local fish&game club.He bought a ruger ultralight in 270win for his wife thinking that it would be light for her to carry around. That rifle has felt recoil comparable to some 300 win mags that I have fired.

the difference between the 270 and 7mm08 is so tiny it's irrelevant. You're not going to gain anything by going to a 270; maybe 100fps with bullets of the same weight with increased powder consumption.

Keep the 7mm08, and get something big to pair it with. A 7mm08 and a 338 WM, for example make a good pair.

If I already had a 7-08 that I liked, the last calibre I would buy is a 270. If you are looking for a more powerful round, the 270 is only marginally more then the 7-08. If you want to move up, then move up. I find no significant difference in the field between the 308 and 30-06 family of cases for the game you mention. To see a difference you have to go to a 300 win mag, it shoots a much bigger bullet (180 gr) at 270 velocities.

270

If it were me, and I reload, I would give the 7-08 to the wife and get a 7mm RM then you could use the same 140gr.partitions for deer and get some 160grNP for anything bigger with super flat trajectory.

Or you could just use the 140gr partition for all big game.

Depends how you define "crazy". ;)

If your wife shoots the 7-08 well, then by all means get yourself the .270. Scratching the itch is pretty rational, AFAIC.

With the .270 Win, I'd say load it with 130 grain Barnes Triple Shocks, Nosler Partitions or Hornady Interbonds and go ahead and kill any game you run into in Alberta.

If your .270 works like mine, you'll find it to be a bit flatter than 140's out of a 7-08 (out at 300+ yards). Anything closer than 250 yards, I don't think there's any meaningful difference between the .270 and the 7-08 (or handloaded 7x57).

Having been a 7x57 and 7-08 shooter for "quite a long time", and a recent shooter of the .270 Win. I'd have to admit that I really enjoy the .270, but I don't think there's a lot of need to load them with 140 or 150 grain bullets for our local game. Better to go with a well-constructed 130 grain bullet and reap the benefit of a flatter trajectory.

X3

why mess around with a slightly marginal increase in MV and smaller slugs

Keep the 7-08 for the wife and go with the 7mmRM, still long action, faster flatter and more oomph at longer range. What's not to like.

and really a 270 why :p
