I am only going to start with one, though I have about half a dozen cartridges on my 'no-thanks' list...

After 32 years, I still can't find a practical use for it, as there are always other cartridges that do the job better. Yes, I served. Yes, I carried. I still detest it.

Yes they work well. But there are loads of other that work just as well. All they have going for them over others is ammo can be bought anywhere for them.

Naming a cartridge without explaining why it is over rated usually indicates a person doesn't have a valid reason or the reason is based more on an individuals feelings than anything else.
 
Well the 45-70 is my favourite cartridge so I’m not getting the hate? Maybe it’s cause I’m a farm guy and it is good for anything from Raccoon to Bear and the lever action rifle is just so damn handy as a truck gun.

30-06 Everyone over 60!tries to tell me it’s the best cartridge ever invented... I don’t believe it is for many reasons!
 
I own one, but 45-70.
Some regard it as the hammer of thor, bear stopper extraordinaire and an all around great cartridge.
In reality, its more of a toy from a bygone era.

yes, the 223 Rem is very impractical. Hard to source ammo and rifles. With the right bullets you can only shoot game smaller than polar bear

I bet you're more of a 219 Donaldson Wasp kinda guy

Good point. The 45-70 doesnt have ammo everywhere. 45-70 should have been listed after the buying ammo part of that post. Over rated for different reasons, Such as being a "short range thumper" yes its short range and yes it thumps but its not nearly as effective at killing as any of the 6.5mm/7mm/30 and 338 cal cases with the same powder capacity

I use to think of it as the hammer of thor until i got my 460 weatherby, 500 jeffery, 43 express and 375H&H. Now not so much.
 
Over rated rifle cartridge is a tough one. Should probably narrow down to hunting only. 6.5 creedmore is a over hyped hunting cartridge IMO its has a mythical reach out and kill persona that’s BS. But is a dandy paper puncher within 600. With it and many others they can put game down but there is a better performer for the job.
 
6.5 CM, won't do anything any better than a hand-full of older cartridges, and is not as good as some real old ones like the 260 Remington and 6.5 x 55.

Hype and marketing BS.
