OK, You asked for it ... What are the most overrated RIFLE cartridges?

7mm rem mag. I have witnessed a number of deer hit good make it a long way with very little blood.

I'm not going to disagree with you, but I've killed game from coyotes up to moose and bison with a 7 rem mag. It's good as long as people remember that it is a compromise cartridge. It's not too much recoil, it's pretty good ballistically, it's easy enough to find ammo for. The guys who just see the word "magnum" and expect it to hit like a dangerous game cartridge and drop 2 inches at 600 yards are going to have a rude awakening.

243 Win. Too small for big game, too big for small game.

I agree with this as well. I find no use for the 243 win.

I also find the 6.5mm class cartridges over rated. Used to own and hunt with a few 6.5's. Feel like the 7mm's do it better. Still retain high BC's and hit harder, while recoil isn't an issue. Talking 7mm-08, 7x57, 7x64, 280REM vs 260REM, 6.5 Creed, 6.5x55 and etc.

No such thing as an overrated cartridge. There are stupid people who think certain cartridges have some sort of magic properties. It's just a combination of powder capacity, length, caliber, availability and maybe history/nostalgia. Not much too it.

It's not about the cartridge, it is about the hype. The .243 Win is a good example, promoted ad nauseam by recoil shy hunters as God's Gift to deer hunters.

Cartridges are more alike than different. Anything that launches a 120gr bullet or larger from 2600 fps or faster is capable of great things when it comes to big game hunting. Most deficiencies are not the cartridges fault.

The funny part is, next week there will be a “most UNDERrated rifle cartridges” thread and many (all) the above cartridges will be named there too...

No one mentioned the 270 yet?
I dont find any cartridge really over rated. Yes i agree some push the limits of cartridges because of hype or some other motive. I have my favorites and ones id rather not own. I know a 223 and 9x19 will kill deer its just not my personal belief of a proper deer cartridge. Same for 2506 for moose and elk. I know itll work just fine and some argue its great and ive seen the results but id prefer more gun. Same as the 270 for varmints. Its works but a small round would likely be better suited. But if we all used just the basic vanilla standard cartridges life wpuld be boring and we wouldnt be able to champion for our favs

True enough. But it's interesting to see people's opinions and reactions.

I see 45-70 mentioned alot here. Doesn't change my opinion of it being an exceptional cartridge in a handy lever gun for just about anything... soft recoiling 405gr Remington Core-Lokt to the hammer-of-thor magnum offerings made by Buffalo Bore. Easy to roll your own too for some cowboy action using Trail Boss. I would hazard a guess it has alot of fans.
