I just trade a sks for a Savage 99 in 300 Savage and more i read on the caliber ( and the rifle) more i love the ammo. I will use it for deers-mooses and probably black bears.

So i want to talk about your experience with, if you reload, what is your receipe

So far i was able to find 1x box of Hornady 150 gr SST® Superformance and one box of Winchester 150gr power point... at 50$ each... i can find Federal 180 gr jacket soft point and remington core lokt 180 gr soft point but a 65$ a box.. i think i will wait.

I load a lot of the 150gr Winchester power point bullets & 150gr Sierra pro hunter bullets in my 300 Savage bolt action and get excellent accuracy with them & IMR4064 or varget. The regular 150gr cup and core bullets work very well on game at 300 Savage velocities. I've tried the 150gr SST bullets as well but couldn't get them to group quite as well as the 150 gr flat base bullets, I think Hornady does make a SST intended for the 300 Savage that is a little different from a regular 150gr SST, I think a little shorter and stubbyier, that you can buy as a component bullet, but I haven't tried them yet.
The last couple deer I shot with power points in 300 Sav went down in a heap right where they were shot, the bullet seems to dump a good amount of energy but still exit.
 
nice .. so i assume that i'ts while that you buy ammo.. right now, i am not equip to reload but in a near futur, i'ts my intention to start reloading... if i have some 308 left over, can i dismount them and re use the bullet with the 300 ?

Yes its the same dimensioned bullet but I would not go through the trouble of taking apart a factory 308 round. If you don't need them sell them and buy some suitable 308 projectiles. Whenever you get into older less popular rounds you really should consider looking into getting a simple press, dies and some reloading data if you want to avoid paying $2-3 round for new factory ammo, you could probably rebuild a round for around a $1 even with today's more expensive component costs. I even understand you can fairly easily case reform and trim 308 brass to remake into new 300 savage brass.

Alternatively, as 300 Savage is not terribly uncommon, they show up at guns shows sometimes a little more reasonably priced.
 
I reload for my .300's. BUT I have found Remington 150 grain Core Lokt to be the very best factory round. Super accurate and lots of knock down with the Core Lokt bullet. I load just like member 300 Savage 150 grain Winchester power point and IMR 4064 or 3031 powder. I make my own brass from .308 Winchester brass. It is an excellent round and easy to reload contrary to what some sources say.

Reforming 308 to 300 Savage works fine. I just did 50 last week that a buddy gave to me. I did attach a cordless drill to my trimmer - there is a fair amount to trim.
For the OP, I picked up a Savage 99 chambered 300 Savage this spring. I have found that 165 Interlocks work good in it though to be honest they were in the cupboard already so that is where I started and didn't have to try any others. This will mainly be my bear stand gun.
 
300 Savage brass is available. If you plan on keeping your rifle, I strongly suggest buying brass when you find it;)
 
since i already have a 2x box of 300 that i will test with the 99 and i am looking for 1-2 other boxes.. so with almost a 100 brass i will just need the rest of the component
 
A tip when using .308 brass for conversion to .300 Savage FL resize in .308 small base die prior to sizing and trimming to .300 Savage. A lot of late models 99 have very tight chambers i have found.

i can talk about my 1923 take down savage: 180 remington core lockt worked on caribous and black bears with no issue at all and will have no problem on a moose even a yukon one.
 
I resized some .312 Hornady 174 grain round nose ( for the .303 British) to .309" They shoot very well from my 1930 99E. I can only get about 2300 fps out of that rifle even with the 24" barrel. The Hornady bullet is for .303 British velocities so it should work well. I have not had the opportunity to shoot any game with it yet. medvedqc's experience with the 180 grain bullet is encouraging.

Thanks for this info. I had not heard of this Savage 99 specific .308 bullet for the 300 Savage ( cannelure located for ideal fit in Savage99 magazine) . So I ordered a couple of boxes and will see how they compare to the generic 308 bullets I had been loading for my Savages.
 
My most accurate load out of my 99 is 150g Nosler Ballistic tip in front of 41.1 gr of IMR 4895. CAUTION this load is higher than published maximum load data according to Hodgdon load data. As always do your due diligence and look up load data in a trusted published source before reloading your own. I have shot many deer with this load. Works like a charm for me.
