9mm tokarev or Norc 45 for my dad

Hello hive,

My dad just got his PAL and I’m going to give him his first pistol.

At 70, he is a smaller frame guy but quite strong.

Do I give him my 9mm tokarev or my norc 1911?

Sounds like he needs a 22lr pistol. Start with a rimfire and work up to a full power pistol.

He will be fine with a larger calibre

A .22 LR makes for a good first time pistol. Cheaper to feed, for more fun time out shooting.

Everyone should have a .22, if only for bringing new people into the shooting sports.

Being older he might appreciate the 1911 clone more but also consider the other Norinco handgun clones. They're all pretty well-made for the price and can be upgraded to improve performance.

I say 1911 , as well , but , seriously, look for a CZ75 pre b , they can be found for a good price, and its a nicer then the tork and cheaper to shoot then the 1911 .

Does he reload? If not I’d give him the 9mm Tok, cheaper to feed.

My father never owned a 22LR ever. Well he did have a Marlin 70 HC, but I bought it, and was registered ( LGR times ) in his name till I got my PAL. Fact my first pistol was a 45 ACP and my first rifle was a Springfield M1A.

I would say 1911, because that was my first gun.

The 1911 has a beaver tail that can save the web of the hand for a newer pistol shooter. The 1911 has a safety for those that want one. Not all places allow steel cased ammo, so the Tok’s cheaper surplus ammo might not be allowed at certain ranges and it’s getting hard to find at a good price anyways. The Tokarev is the cheapest pistol to be found and historically collectible while the very practical norc 1911 will never be collectible in this country. I’d pick the Norc


While the 22lr is cheaper to feed, I find I don’t get out to shoot very often, so I’d rather shoot something bigger.

Well, a .22 does get boring...fast. But it has it's place.
