Hi everyone
The son of my patner have passed is hunting courts
Now its time for is dad to buy a firts rifle
I came across a use 783 in 270 whit a old vx2 2-7 for 400$
We can’t try it before so here is my question for you
Does 270 its to much recoil for a youngster?

Thx

Keep shopping and find a 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm08. Noticeably less recoil than a 270, and results on game will be the same

The 7/08 and 270 win don’t have a noticeable difference in recoil ime.
The weight and fit of the gun will make a larger difference in the recoil department

This depends a lot on the rifle, the stock fit, and the weight. Brother-in-law had an old BSA 270 that kicked like a mule. Kicked more than my Savage 7mm RM. Father-in-laws old Cooey 710 in 270 is a joy to shoot. It's really to bad you can't try it out beforehand, because 270 is a borderline caliber when it comes to felt recoil. It is a good price though.....you should probably buy it for yourself at the very least, and that way you'll have a back-up.

30-40% more recoil with a 270, apples to apples. Why set the kid up for failure?

My son has 7m08. He shoots nice groups with it. If he shoots the 7mm mag or 3006 the first shot is on the money. his follow up shots are lucky to hit paper. Can’t hold the gun steady when he knows the recoil is coming.

Or perhaps why baby him? Maybe he is a kid who plays rough... OP didn't say he was milquetoast. Some kids like big boy toys... I did. Most of my kids do too.
We shouldn't judge all by our standards.
Best thing OP could do would be to go to the range with a few mates ( with their rifles) and let the boy decide for himself.
If he gets adults feeding him BS about recoil or lack of... he won't get a chance to make up his mind on his own.
Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. Give him some options and let him decide for his own.
Instead of listening to our petty BS about recoil, accuracy or lack of.

Not a commentary on if the advice is good (almost certainly is) but it’s interesting how the 6.5 creed seems to have totally replaced the 243 win as a suggestion when these threads come up

Make sure he wears earplugs & muffs. Nobody used ear protection when I was young and I'm pretty sure my hearing loss started with the first time I fired a .270.

Has the young man ever shot a center fire rifle and if so what was his reaction? My daughter was 12 and used full power loads in a light 303 sporter with no issues and killed geese with a 12 gauge . Recoil is a personal limit that varies with a persons, size being only one factor. If you know someone with a 270 let him try a shot or two offhand and see what he thinks.

^^^ This is about right.
Instead of deciding for the Lad...maybe let him decide on his own... I never shot 'women and children's' calibers til I was long an adult. At that point they meant little because I could tolerate recoil.
Or perhaps let's take it away from rifles and turn it to vehicles. Teach a kid to drive a manual transmission vehicle and the world is their oyster... teach them in an automatic and they will likely never learn. Is it necessary? Well it sure is a handy skill to have.
That'd be his father's choice at days end I suppose.
Ticks me a bit when right away someone assumes that 'a Kid can't do that!'
Why? Because you can't?

270 is a great choice for new and seasoned shooters. Recoil is very manageable. But, skip the Remington economy rifles (710, 783, etc) as they are junk.

To say that the 6.5 caliber has no recoil is wrong. To say also that the 270 Win has an unmanageable recoil is also wrong. Yes there is a difference, for similar bullet weight, but it is not huge. There is no difference in recoil between a 130 grain 270 win loaded to 2800 fps and a 140 grain loaded to 2700 in 6.5.
One can load down a 270 win, it will then have the same recoil, speed, and efficiency as a 7mm-08 or a 6.5. The 7-08 and 6.5 can never become a 270 win.
