A good .22LR is an excellent idea for a beginner's pistol, but between the Tokarev and the 1911, the 1911 is the far better choice.

The 1911 guy in me says go with the 1911.... But if your Dad isn't going to reload then 9mm is way cheaper to feed with factory fodder than a .45ACP these days. The 9mm might be a better choice for his circumstances.

You can get 1911's in 9mm. Norinco has the NP29, for example. OP could save for a month or two and buy a new one instead of giving away his; it's something to consider I think.

Tokarev are fun, but horrible ergonomics, way different grip angle than other pistols. Just not a good starter gun at all.

1911 is fine, but expensive to feed, is that an issue for him?

Hello hive,

My dad just got his PAL and I’m going to give him his first pistol.

At 70, he is a smaller frame guy but quite strong.

Do I give him my 9mm tokarev or my norc 1911?

Assuming 9mm Tokarev is in fact Serbian Zastava M70A and next assuming it has no issues with slide staying back on empty or without a magazine inserted - Tokarev ..
cheaper to feed and more mild on aging hands .. some trigger polishing would make pull lighter too ...
and add new grips which make it almost contemporary on ergonomics (I have one to spare, brought from Serbia directly by a coworker)

Thanks for letting me know there's 1911's in 9mm.... .... I've literally owned dozens of 1911's..... some of 'em have even been in 9mm....

My reply was speaking specifically to the OP's original post where he pondered whether to gift his father his Tok 9mm or Norc 1911 .45

If its a norc 213 tok in 9mm id hard pass. I had one and it was awful. Cycled alright. But patterned like a shotgun. Everyone who shot it was left wondering what they were hitting.

Also he might only get out once a month, so 45ACP might not be cost burden.

Check out the EE to see what you can find in a reasonably priced 9MM pistol. A used CZ75B or 85 Combat are great buys. The guns are well made. Ammunition is relatively inexpensive.

I have sold off all but one of my Norcs. They are decent pistols. The 1911's in 9MM ,from my experience, can be hit or miss. The hits are great guns..the misses are poor boat anchors. The 45acp chambered seem to be better.
