Do you count gophers? I'm over 1000 for this year and I've only been out 6 times. Best days yet are 420, 419 and last Saturday at 462. We are over 1,300 in the same pasture this spring! My TUF is getting a workout!

Yes i do. 3 days. 3 spots. Just me shooting. 1214 hits. We have a big outbreak. They are on the top of the cycle and decimateing the canola at the moment

Last 3 outings (shooting buddy included)~ 2500 - 3000 gophers - last outing was 13 hours of non stop shooting with $370 of ammo dusted.........getting expensive! But fun factor is high using my Tuff22 with my CZ 457 Mach2 (LW barrel) a close second :)

First of all, the photo in the thread starter=my retirement plan, if anyone is interested. :)

Oh so jealous, 2 yrs in a row not going west....... the itch.

^you and me both hank, cancelled last year (Covid unknowns) cancelled this year too. (Ontario threatening border closures at the time, no full refunds offered on accommodations/rental vehicle, etc.) That photo in the thread starter physically hurts to look at. lol

Do other varmints get the bodies?

Carnivors themselves...... didn't believe it until I saw it myself. Lots of other scavengers to clean them up too
=very true, and what's more alarming is how fast they can turn on their fallen brethren. As in, seconds sometimes. I've been hunting groundhogs here in Ontario for close to 10 years, and never saw that behavior until my first hunt this spring. Could barely believe it. As fate would have it, I spotted #2 munching on #1 from the same spot I took shot #1=289 yards. The 204 delivered the same result. lol One theory I've read suggests it has nothing to do with being a food source, rather, to avoid smell...and the predators it may attract.

As for scavengers-the Swainson's hawks (where we shoot in S.Alberta) seem to come to the sound of gunfire and seem to stick around for the free snacks the whole time. We took note of all the scavengers we saw on a daily basis, and they included; ravens, seagulls (yes, seagulls eating dead gophers), weasels, foxes..and even a coyote pup 1X. lol

Oh soo much fun, dad myself and one of my dads close friends need to get out next year no excuses, it'll likely be his freinds last trip out with his age and abilities. Thanks op for sharing and the photo and others don't be shy to share clips/stories of you're outings too please

I know they are expensive, but after the first day using my Really Right Stuff tripod with Anvil30 clamped to pic/arca rail on my gopher guns, I drove away thinking the tripod had paid for itself that day. If the gophers are thick enough to justify getting out of the car, it's way nicer to shoot off these tripods than trying to use the car/truck as a rest.

I'll also take this shameless opportunity to plug my thread on mid-high range gopher optics:

Note that the Bushnell 2-16x50 is covered by a rebate that ends tonight. It is onsale at Frontier (site sponsor) for $850:

#1 I dislike you and your nice gopher gear/live gopher reactive targets (kidding)
#2 please post details/links/photos of the "Really Right Stuff tripod with Anvil30" (=not kidding :) )

Great picture Beater! I'm heading back to Pallisers Triangle myself this weekend with gophers on my mind.

Tripod is here:
soar.reallyrightstuff.com/TVC-22i
It's a unique model with only two sections per leg, and the sections are 'inverted'. Together this makes it much quicker to deploy. It has the downside of not retracting as short in the leg for minimum height and transport, so it's a compromise. RRS also has conventional 3 and 4 leg section models.

Ball/leveling head is here:
soar.reallyrightstuff.com/Anvil-30-Ballhead
It's designed as a mixture between a ball and a leveling head. It has more range than a leveling head but less than a ball. But it excels at quick adjustment and usable tension range with a rifle on top.

so to show my age and ignorance of current policy .. do any of the Provinces / Counties still provide a bounty on the tails? I remember as a kid we'd collect the tails and more than pay for the ammo (even as poorly as we shot) with the bounties. That could just have been a county thing as well.

No R.M.'s that I know of still pay a bounty; the good old days. We still count tails for our Fish & Game Gopher shoot, but that's for something money can't buy, bragging rights.
